Clifford Gray Lewis Financial Assistance Award

Purpose and Description

The Clifford Gray Lewis Financial Assistance Award was established in 1989 to honor Clifford Gray Lewis, who served the Department of Physical Education at the University of Georgia from 1946 to her retirement in 1985. The award is to assist undergraduate students preparing to become physical education teachers in need of financial assistance to continue their education.

Eligibility

Full-time undergraduate Health and Physical Education majors in the Department of Kinesiology in need of financial assistance to continue their education. The Award can be received more than once.

Application and Criteria

Applicants should submit: (1) A formal letter of application summarizing the applicant’s financial situation and need. (2) A resume or attachment summarizing cumulative GPA and hours completed, education, employment, awards received, membership in professional organizations, offices held and service on committees, scholarly writing related to physical education, presentations related to physical education, campus service activities, community service activities, and participation in special events or sports. (3) One letter of recommendation from a faculty member in Kinesiology and one letter of reference documenting financial need. Electronic copies of the application materials (Word documents) should be sent at e-mail attachments to the graduate coordinator’s assistant (kins@uga.edu) in the Kinesiology Department. Applications should be submitted at least one month prior to the beginning of any semester. Electronic copies of letters of reference (Word document) from University faculty also should be sent as e-mail attachments to the same e-mail address (see the graduate coordinator’s assistant if this is a problem). Applications will be reviewed by three faculty members in the physical education program. The criteria for selection of the recipient will include commitment to a career in teaching of physical education and financial need.
