Ann E. Jewett Distinguished Graduate Assistantship

Purpose and Description

This distinguished assistantship was established in 2006 to honor Ann E. Jewett, a pioneer in the development of Physical Education Curriculum and former Professor and Chair of the Division of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance at the University of Georgia. The purpose of assistantship is to assist outstanding students in the Department of Kinesiology who plan a career in the field in physical education curriculum and instruction.

Eligibility and Awards

One distinguished assistantship per year is awarded to a Kinesiology graduate student with the following attributes: earned outstanding undergraduate and graduate GPAs of 3.5 or higher; plans a career in physical education curriculum and instruction for K-12 or higher education and/or administration; demonstrates potential for excellence in teaching, research or service in the field of physical education curriculum and instruction. A plaque presented at the Kinesiology Awards Banquet and a 9-month, one-half time graduate assistantship involving 1/3 time teaching and 1/6 time research are awarded. Students must have at least one year of study remaining.

Application and Criteria

Applicants should submit: (1) A formal letter of application summarizing the their interest in and qualifications for the award; (2) A resume or attachment summarizing cumulative undergraduate and graduate GPA, education, employment, awards received, membership in professional organizations, offices held and service on committees, publications, presentations, and campus or professional service activities. (3) A letter of recommendation from the student’s faculty advisor. Electronic copies of the application materials (Word documents) should be sent as e-mail attachments to the graduate coordinator’s assistant (kins@uga.edu) in the Kinesiology Department Office by 5 pm on March 1. Electronic copies of letters of reference (Word document) from University faculty also should be sent as e-mail attachments to the same e-mail address. Applications will be reviewed by a faculty committee. The student possessing the attributes listed above to the greatest extent will be selected.
