Mike Castronis Scholarship Award

Purpose and Description

The Mike Castronis Scholarship Award was established in 1997 to honor Coach Mike Castronis, who served the Physical Education Department and Athletic Department at the University of Georgia from 1960 to 1985.  The scholarship recognizes an outstanding undergraduate student committed to a career in teaching of physical education or coaching.   

Eligibility

A $1,000 award is presented to one full-time undergraduate Health and Physical Education major in the Department of Kinesiology. Applicants must have completed 30-90 semester hours, a 3.0 GPA (2.5 or higher acceptable if extenuating circumstances), exceptional character traits, and a desire to teach and guide young people.  Financial need is considered. The award can be received only once.

Application and Criteria

Applicants should submit: (1) A formal letter of application summarizing the applicant’s interest in, qualifications for and commitment to a career in teaching physical education and coaching. (2) A resume or attachment summarizing cumulative GPA and hours completed, education, employment and experience in teaching physical education and coaching, awards received, membership in professional organizations, offices held and service on committees, scholarly writing related to physical education and coaching, presentations related to physical education and coaching, campus service activities, community service activities, and participation in special events or sports. (3) Three letters of recommendation from University faculty. Electronic copies of the application materials (Word documents) should be sent at e-mail attachments to Marlee Stewart (mmstew@uga.edu) in the Kinesiology Department Office by 5 pm on March 1. Electronic copies of letters of reference (Word document) from University faculty also should be sent as e-mail attachments to the same e-mail address.  Applications will be reviewed by three faculty members in the physical education program.  The criteria for selection of the recipient will include academic achievement, participation in activities demonstrating leadership and commitment to the teaching of physical education and coaching, exceptional character traits related to teaching and coaching, desire to teaching and guide young people, financial need.
