Graduate Assistantships
A variety of assistantship opportunities are available on a competitive basis to graduate students in the Department of Kinesiology. Funding for these assistantships comes from the Kinesiology Department, from other Departments and units (Graduate School, Athletic Association, Recreational Sports), from funds generated from program income, from scholarships and from external grants and contracts. These assistantships provide financial support and invaluable work and academic experience for highly-qualified students, and help the University carry out its teaching, research and service programs.
Graduate assistants work 13-20 hours/week while completing their academic programs. Students with graduate assistantships must be full-time and enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours, including the Graduate Student Seminar [KINS 7005 (master’s students) or 9005 (doctoral students)], each semester during the academic year or 9 semester hours during the summer. Graduate assistants receive a monthly stipend, full tuition waiver, and one-third remission of health insurance if enrolled on the University plan. The standard stipend is currently $13,980 for doctoral students (17 hours work/week) and $11,190 for master's students (13 hours of work/week). To receive an assistantship, students must be admitted to the Graduate School. In addition, international students whose native language is not English, must demonstrate fluency in English with a score of 26 or above on the TOEFL Academic Speaking Test (TAST) to be considered for a Graduate Teaching or Graduate Laboratory Assistantship. To be considered for all assistantship opportunities, an application for admission and the Department Assistantship Application Form should be submitted by mid-January. Faculty nominate incoming graduate students for Graduate School Recruitment Assistantships during the first week in February. Other assistantship appointment decisions are typically made by Department faculty during February and March.
