Timeline of Historical Events

1904 -New gymnasium built at the Georgia State Normal School at Athens. Maude Kathan hired to teach Physical Culture, the first physical education at the Normal School. The Normal School later became the Georgia State Teacher's College, part of the College of Education of the University of Georgia.
1921 -Physical education courses first offered to meet a requirement for the B.S. in Home Economics, State College of Agriculture. Martha McAlpine in the Division of Home Economics hired to teach physical education.
1924 -Department of Physical Education for Women and a B.S. in Physical Education established within the College of Agriculture.
1925 -Mary Ella Lunday Soule became Head of the Department of Physical Education for Women. She remained Head until 1960.
1927 -Department name changed to Health and Physical Education.
1928 -First women Health and Physical Education major students receive B.S. degrees.
1928 -Women's Physical Education Building constructed.
1930 -First master's thesis in physical education published.
1932 -The Department of Physical Education for Women transferred to the College of Education.
1934 -Department of Physical Education for Men added to the College of Education. B.S. in Physical Education and B.S.Ed. with a major in Physical Education offered.
1943 -Stegeman Hall, home of the Departments of Athletics and Men's Physical Education Constructed (by the U.S. Navy).
1946 -Departments of Men's and Women's Physical Education combined into a Division in the College of Education. Ernest B. Smith was hired as Chair of the Division and Head of the Men's Department of Physical Education. Recreation later added and the Division of Health, Physical Education and Recreation established.
1960 -Clifford Lewis appointed Head of Department of Physical Education for Women.
1964 -Within the Department of Physical Education for Women, a research laboratory for the scientific investigation of movement, conditioning, physiology of exercise, psychomotor skills and general motor skills was initiated under the supervision of Marilyn Vincent. Research projects began for the first time.
1967 -First Ed.D. with a major in Physical Education graduated (Mary Leslie).
1968 -First member of Physical Education faculty (Marilyn Vincent) appointed to the Graduate Faculty.
1968 -Ralph Johnson hired as Chair of the Division of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
1970 -West wing added to the Women's Physical Education Building.
1974 -Ann Jewett hired as Chair of the Division of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. The Departments of Physical Education for Men and Women merged.
1975 -Pediatric Exercise and Motor Development Clinic established by Ernie Bundschuh. Michael Horvat later supervised this clinic.
1976 -Human Performance Laboratory (later to become Exercise Physiology Laboratory and Metabolism and Body Composition Laboratory) established in Clarke Howell Hall by Kirk Cureton.
1977 -Graduate program specialization in sport management started by Robert Bowen. Stanley Brassie and Carolyn Lehr later provide leadership for development of the program.
1978 -Marilyn Vincent Motor Learning Laboratory established by Patricia DelRey.
1979 -Stan Brassie appointed Head of the Department of Physical Education.
1980 -Fitness Center and adult fitness and cardiac rehabilitation programs serving faculty, staff and the community established by Harry DuVal.
1984 -Undergraduate major in Exercise and Sport Science approved.
1985 -Doctor or Philosophy in Physical Education degree approved.
1985 -Behavioral Fitness Laboratory (later to become Exercise Psychology Laboratory) established by Rod Dishman. Patrick O'Connor later became co-director of this laboratory.
1985 -Muscle Biology Laboratory established by Robert Armstrong. Armstrong brought the first NIH grant to the Department and was the first to do animal research. Between 1993 and 2006, this laboratory was used by Gary Dudley.
1986 -Jack Razor appointed Chair of the Division of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
1986 -Human Performance Laboratory moved to the Physical Education Building.
1986 -NASPE Curriculum and Instruction Research & Development Center established under the direction of Ann Jewett.
1987 -Biomechanics Laboratory established by Kathy Simpson.
1991 -The Department of Physical Education split into a Department of Exercise Science and a Department of Physical Education and Sport Studies. Kirk Cureton was appointed Head of the Department of Exercise Science. Stan Brassie was appointed Head of the Department of Physical Education and Sport Studies.
1991 -NASPE Curriculum and Instruction Research & Development Center becomes Sport Instruction Research Laboratory under the direction of Paul Schempp.
1993 -Graduate major in Exercise Science approved.
1995 -Departments of Exercise Science and Physical Education and Sport Studies moved to the Ramsey Center for Student Physical Activities.
1995 -Motor Behavior Laboratory established by Michael Horvat.
1995 -Autonomic and Cardiovascular Control Laboratory established by Chester Ray.
1997 -Sport studies and management undergraduate and graduate programs expand over the next seven years with the addition of new faculty: Michael Lomax, Billy Hawkins, Frank Veltri, Sarah Fields.
1998 -Undergraduate major in Sport Studies approved.
1998 -An undergraduate program in athletic training and the Athletic Training Laboratory established by Michael Ferrara.
1998 -Aging and Physical Performance Laboratory established by Elaine Cress.
1999 -Autonomic and Cardiovascular Control Laboratory renamed to Exercise Vascular Biology Laboratory by Kevin McCully.
2000 -Paul Schempp appointed Head of the Department of Physical Education and Sport Studies.
2000 -Undergraduate program in athletic training nationally certified by CAAHEP.
2003 -Marilyn Vincent Motor Learning Laboratory renamed to Cognition and Skill Acquisition Lab by Phil Tomporowski.
2003 -The School of Health and Human Performance, which contained the Departments of Exercise Science and Physical Education and Sports Studies, was eliminated as a prelude to reorganization of the College of Education.
2004 -The Department of Exercise Science and Physical Education and Sport Studies were administrative merged as part of reorganization of the College of Education.
2004 -Graduate program in sport studies closes for one year due to loss of faculty. New faculty hired over the next three years (Doyeon Won, Joel Maxcy, and Thomas Baker) restores program faculty.
2005 -Department of Kinesiology, consisting of the former Departments of Exercise Science and Physical Education and Sport Studies, was officially approved by the Board of Regents.
2005 -Department of Kinesiology doctoral program ranked 14th in nation by American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education.
2007 -Muscle Biology Laboratory renamed to Neuromuscular Physiology Laboratory by Lesley White.
2008 -Name of the undergraduate major in Sport Studies was changed to Sport Management.
