Activities

The program is designed for the person who is interested in a supervised, structured and regular multilevel fitness program. A qualified exercise specialist will lead the class in exercises designed to develop cardiovascular endurance, flexibility and muscular strength. Individual consultations and progress reports will be kept to assure an accurate evaluation of your progress while enrolled in the program.

The class content consists of the following

  1. Warm up period. This is designed for flexibility, muscular strength and endurance and includes 5-10 minutes of stretching and aerobic activities.
  2. Cardiovascular endurance. Thirty minutes of cardiovascular activities including step aerobics, treadmill jogging/walking and cycling.
  3. Muscular Strength and Endurance. Twenty minutes of weight training designed to implement each area of the body. The use of dumbbells, resistance bands and stability balls are used to target all major muscle groups.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Program (Phase III)

Purpose

The purpose of the University of Georgia's Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program is to involve the participants in activities designed to develop flexibility, strength, muscular endurance and cardiovascular endurance. Educational measures to provide knowledge in areas such as nutrition, smoking cessation, hypertension, weight control and stress management can be incorporated into the program.

Activities

This program is designed for the person who is interested in a supervised, structured, and regular multilevel cardiac rehabilitation program. A qualified Exercise Specialist will lead to class in exercises designed to develop cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, and strength. Weight training activities can be added to the program for participants with physician approval. Individual data and progress reports will be kept to assure an accurate evaluation of individual progress.

The class contents consist of:

  1. Individuals are monitored for current health status. This includes resting heart rate and blood pressure.
  2. Warm up period. This offers 15 minutes of aerobic exercise and stretching to improve cardiovascular endurance and flexibility. Core exercises are incorporated to strengthen abdominal region and lower back.
  3. Individuals are then instructed on Cardiovascular exercises appropriate for ability levels and are monitored during exercise for approximately 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise designed to improve cardiovascular endurance.
  4. Individuals can then incorporate strength training exercises to improve on muscular strength and endurance.
  5. Individuals are then encouraged to cool down and get a final reading (blood pressure and heart rate) to ensure that individuals are at resting baseline.
  6. There are aquatic exercise sessions scheduled during the 9:30 Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program.

During Phase III sessions, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) personnel will be on duty. Participants are monitored for physiological changes that occur during exercise, things such as blood pressure and heart rate. Only with approval from a physician and a complete fitness evaluation can participants participate in this program.

Fitness Evaluation

Each participant involved in the adult fitness or cardiopulmonary rehabilitation programs are required to get a complete fitness evaluation. This is designed to evaluate the current health and fitness levels of the participants. The following tests are available through the Fitness Center.

  • Exercise Stress Testing with ECG Interpretation (physician supervised)
  • Resting Electrocardiogram
  • Pulmonary Function
  • Body Composition
  • Flexibility

Following these tests, a counseling session is scheduled where the results are discussed and an individualized exercise program is recommended. Re-tests are required yearly for Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation participants and every five years for adult fitness participants.

Student Testing

Student fitness evaluations are available for assessment of body composition, flexibility and aerobic capacity. Testing requires student to sign up in advance in Room 101.
