Physical Education Programs

The Department of Kinesiology offers undergraduate and graduate programs in the area of physical education that focus on curriculum and teaching in physical education, adapted physical education and motor behavior.  The undergraduate major in health and physical education prepares students to teach health and physical education and coach sports in the schools and other community organizations, and to acquire certification to teach in grades P-12 in the State of Georgia.  The Kinesiology graduate program specialization in sport pedagogy provides the opportunity for advanced study and research for students interested in the study and practice of teaching physical education, sport, and physical activity. Coursework in instructional strategies, curriculum theory and design, issues and trends in pedagogical research, and analysis of teaching provide students with the latest information on teaching physical education, sport, and physical activity. The program also offers ample opportunities for field work and research laboratory experience. The M.S. and M.S. non-thesis programs are structured to serve the needs of future and practicing teachers, while the Ph.D. program serves those who aspire to become researchers and physical education teacher educators. The Kinesiology graduate program emphasis in motor behavior focuses on the development of movement, physical function and skill acquisition across the life span. Programs of study with an emphasis in adapted physical education, skill acquisition, and physical activity for the disabled lead to an M.S., M.S.-nonthesis or Ph.D. in Kinesiology.  Students participate in coursework, practicum and research experiences designed to facilitate in-depth knowledge of movement as it relates to sport performance, aging, motor development and skill acquisition. Research experiences are conducted in the Movement Studies Laboratory, the Cognition and Skill Acquisition Laboratory, local school districts and public agencies.
