Information Literacy

The Big6

The BIG6 is an information literacy curriculum that breaks research and information problem-solving into a process.  Mike Eisenberg’s web site, http://www.big6.com, provides resources to support teaching and learning the research process.

Eisenberg’s Big6 are:

  1. Task Definition (define the task and identify the information needed to solve the problem)
  2. Information Seeking Strategies (brainstorm and select best sources)
  3. Location and Access (locate sources from appropriate multiple sources)
  4. Use of Information (engage and extract appropriate information)
  5. Synthesis (organize and present information)
  6. Evaluation (judge the process and product)

The research process is an important skill that can be used in school, personal, and work applications.  It is a skill that will empower lifelong learners who must keep up in a fast-paced and ever-changing world.  Our students learn this process best when it is integrated into the curriculum by content area teachers.
