Information Literacy

“Check it out on the Internet.

                   ”Have you seen that blog?”

“Did you look in the Wikipedia?”

“I posted my pictures on MySpace.”

“He saw that clip on YouTube.”

Students have information at their fingertips.  Anytime, anyplace access to text, photos, music, and video is here to stay.  The tools to access this information are getting smaller, less expensive, and just plain fun to use.  Just check out the number of people you see who are listening, talking, and viewing through devices that serve as phones, calendars, music players, and web access.

What does this mean for educators?

What does it mean to be literate in this kind of world?

Information literacy has been identified as a critical skill for the 21st century.   The good news is that all of the information that is available creates a stage for lifelong learning and data-driven decision making.  The challenge is to develop the skills to be an effective user of information rather than one that is drowning in “information noise” or fooled by inaccuracy or glitzy packaging.
