Technology Integration

Technology Planning and Requirements for Success

In 1996, President Clinton issued a technology literacy challenge with a goal of connecting all schools to the Internet by 2000.  Connectivity was not enough to achieve the goal of creating students with the academic knowledge and technical skills to contribute and be successful in work, education, and community life.  Chief executives from industry and education formed the CEO Forum on Education and Technology in response to the President’s challenge.

President Clinton identified four pillars or critical elements:

“Connections – ensuring that all schools are connected to the Internet

Hardware – ensuring that schools have adequate hardware for instructional use

Content – ensuring that appropriate content exists for teachers to integrate into their curricula

Professional Development – ensuring that teachers are quipped with the necessary skills to integrate the technology into the curriculum.”

CEO Forum

The CEO Forum on Education and Technology published four reports available at http://www.ceoforum.org.  These reports, along with the STaR chart, provide a roadmap for schools as they plan and assess school technology and readiness.

See http://www.ceoforum/reports.html for:

Year 1 Report – From Pillars to Progress (a focus on hardware and connectivity)
Year 2 Report – Professional Development:  A Link to Better Learning
(focus on professional development for teachers)
Year 3 Report – School Technology and Readiness (a focus on digital learning)
Year 4 Report – Key Building Blocks for Student Achievement in the 21st Century (a focus on outcomes and assessment)

STaR Chart – Interactive and PDF versions of rubrics to assist in assessing a school’s technology resources and readiness to effectively integrate technology and curriculum

The CEO Forum Policy Paper – Education Technology Must be Included in Comprehensive Education Legislation March 2001 (a focus on education & technology)
