Technology Integration

What is it?

Walk down any street.  Peer into any classroom.  Step into any shopping mall.  Visit any park.  You will see students, young and old, connected.  You will see digital devices ranging from phones, to iPods®, to laptops, to global positioning systems.  Any educator should ask the question, “How can we reach students without using the tools of their generation?  What skills do these students need to be successful in a fast-paced, ever changing, and totally connected world?”  If students are to be engaged in our classrooms, our classrooms and how we teach in them, must match the way our students live.  And if our students do not live this way, the classroom must provide the chance to bridge this digital divide.

Technology Integration

The shift from a focus on tools to a focus on skills and expertise can be seen in the next generation of National Educational Standards for Students (NETS). These standards address:

  • creativity and innovation;
  • communication and collaboration;
  • research and information fluency;
  • critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making;
  • digital citizenship; and
  • technology operations and concepts

Effective technology integration uses technology, content, and pedagogy to create a dynamic, connected, and relevant classroom experience.

In 1998, it was enough to define what students needed to know about and be able to do with technology. Now, we're defining what students need to know and be able to do with technology to learn effectively and live productively in a rapidly changing digital world.

Digital Storytelling

Digital Storytelling takes the ancient art of oral storytelling and engages a palette of technical tools to weave personal tales using images, graphics, music and sound mixed together with the author's own story voice. Digital storytelling is an emerging art form of personal, heartful expression that enables individuals and communities to reclaim their personal cultures while exploring their artistic creativity. While the heart and power of the digital story is shaping a personal digital story about self, family, ideas, or experiences, the technology tools also invite writers and artists to think and invent new types of communication outside the realm of traditional linear narratives.
