Computer Labs

Why use computer labs in the classroom?

Computer labs can be extremely useful for teachers and students alike.  They can be used in the following situations:

  • Provides Internet access
  • Extra practice with CD-Roms that come with the textbook
  • Allows students time to write and research papers and other projects
  • Teachers can project images from his or her screen for all to see
  • Students can play computer games that pertain to the curriculum, including teacher-created games from sites like www.quia.com
  • Students enjoy using computers
  • Takes the students outside of the normality of the classroom
  • Helps the teacher implement more technology into his or her curriculum
  • Students can watch video clips
  • Students can listen to sound bites

However, computer labs can present problems within the schools:

  • Expense
  • Upkeep can be rigorous
  • Theft (everything from the computer programs to equipment)
  • Equipment or Internet failure
  • Not enough labs to serve the school’s population
  • Keeping students on task
