Computer Labs

What are they?

Computer labs are found in schools and universities where students and staff may use and share workstations, printers, file servers and Internet access.  Generally, they are located in separate rooms where a teacher can conduct a class with each student using his or her own computer.  Sometimes, computer labs can be housed in the library of the school too.  In many cases, the teacher uses a main computer, and the teacher’s computer screen is projected onto a larger screen for the entire class to see.

In most schools, students must log on to the computer using their Student ID numbers.  According to school policies, they may have to create a password to continue use.  This enables the teacher or the media center specialist to monitor the student’s choice of websites.

Computer labs with Internet access have become increasingly popular in the 21st Century.  Even with the implementation of laptops, many schools still use computer labs as the main way of granting Internet access to students and staff.
