Jane McGonigal – Reality is Broken

Spring 2013 Selection: Reality is Broken, Jane McGonigal

The ITT Book Club will be meeting this spring to discuss the following book:

McGonigal, Jane (2011). Reality is broken. New York: Penguin Press.

Here is a description of the book: “With 174 million gamers in the United States alone, we now live in a world where every generation will be a gamer generation. But why, Jane McGonigal asks, should games be used for escapist entertainment alone? In this groundbreaking book, she shows how we can leverage the power of games to fix what is wrong with the real world-from social problems like depression and obesity to global issues like poverty and climate change-and introduces us to cutting-edge games that are already changing the business, education, and nonprofit worlds. Written for gamers and non-gamers alike, Reality Is Broken shows that the future will belong to those who can understand, design, and play games.”

McGonigal also appeared on the Colbert Report on February 3, 2011 to discuss her book:

ITT November 2012 Book Club selection: Howard Rheingold’s Net Smart

The Innovation in Teaching & Technology Book Club continues in November 2012 with the third book selection, Howard Rheingold’s Net Smart (2012, MIT Press).

The ITT Book Club will be meeting this fall to discuss the following book:
Rheingold, Howard (2012). Net Smart: How to thrive online. Cambridge, MA: MIT Press.

The future of digital culture—yours, mine, and ours—depends on how well we learn to use the media that have infiltrated, amplified, distracted, enriched, and complicated our lives. I’ve been asking myself and others how to use social media intelligently, humanely, and above all mindfully. This book is about what I’ve learned.

All faculty, staff, and students are welcome to join us. If you are interested in participating, please submit this form.

The discussion will take place Monday, December 3, at 1:00 pm (room TBA). You are responsible to purchase the book on your own. Food will be provided at the discussion!

November 2011 selection:
Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other, by Sherry Turkle

ALONE TOGETHER, by Sherry Turkle

ITT November 2011 Book Club Selection

The Innovation in Teaching & Technology Book Club begins in November 2011 with the first book selection, Sherry Turkle’s Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other, (2011, Basic Books). Leaders for this Book Club selection are Dr. Janette Hill and Dr. Lloyd Rieber.

Alone Together explores the power of our new tools and toys to dramatically alter our social lives. It’s a nuanced exploration of what we are looking for—and sacrificing—in a world of electronic companions and social networking tools, and an argument that, despite the hand-waving of today’s self-described prophets of the future, it will be the next generation who will chart the path between isolation and connectivity.
