GirlTECH A Teacher Training Program (CRPC)
http://nhse.cs.rice.edu/CRPC/Women/GirlTECH/ The goal of the Center for Research on Parallel Computation (CRPC), an NSF-funded Science and Technology Center, is to encourage young women to pursue careers in math and science. GirlTECH is a teacher training and student council program from the Center; during the GirlTECH training period at The Rice School in Houston, Texas, participating teachers from the Houston area receive intensive technology training and explore innovative teaching strategies that address gender equity in the classroom. MAA/Tensor Foundation Program http://www.maa.org/projects/maaprograms.html#tensor The MAA plans to award grants for projects designed to encourage college, university, or high school women to study mathematics. The Tensor Foundation, working through the MAA, is soliciting college, university and high school mathematics faculty (in conjunction with college or university faculty) and their departments and institutions to submit proposals. Projects may replicate existing successful projects, adapt components of such projects, or be innovative. Marymount College's Institute for the Education of Women and Girls (Tarrytown, N.Y.) http://www.marymt.edu/~wominst/ The Institute supports teacher training, conferences, support for educational programs for women and girls, and publishes the Equity newsletter. Purple Moon Place P Edutainment Just for Girls Purple Moon, a nominee for the 1997 Codie Software Awards, is a site just for girls. Registration is required for girls to participate in the interactive forums, Web pages, and other activities. Site was based on extensive research on what young girls are interested in. A nationwide collaboration between Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. and The Franklin Institute Science Museum in Philadelphia, PA. Its goal is to make science fun and exciting for girls as they earn Girl Scout recognitions by supporting Girl Scout leaders through training and hands-on science kits. Operation Smart Girls, Inc. http://www.feminist.com/girlsinc.htm Girls are involved in hands-on experiences, building and taking things apart, questioning and predicting, and developing an understanding of what scientists do. Volunteers can assist with hands-on activities, provide field trips, and serve as mentors. TECH TREK TECH TREK is a project designed to interest adolescent girls in the science and technology of television and radio broadcasting. Funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation to WGTE, Toledo Public Broadcasting, TECH TREK used the technical communications expertise and facilities of public broadcasting to demonstrate innovative ways to advance interest in science, engineering and math careers. TECH TREK was designed to immerse young women in active science/technology exploration and to help them experience a sense of fun and excitement over their involvement.
