Program Description

Scholars in many fields are taking note of global technological and social changes leading to an increasing interdependency among nations. Future opportunities will transcend national boundaries and individuals will need to learn to think and work across cultures. The demand for adult education is increasing throughout the world, resulting in an increased need to share and develop knowledge about adult learning and education. To this end, the Cyril O. Houle Scholars in Adult and Continuing Education Program is intended to foster the development of emerging scholars who will make a significant contribution to the field of adult education. The award may be used to fund research and/or demonstration projects and supporting professional development activities. By identifying and nurturing a diverse cadre of scholars in adult education, the program seeks to make an important investment in the future of the field. .

In 1997 this program was funded by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation in honor of Cyril O. Houle, and is administered by the Department of Adult Education, the University of Georgia. Nine award recipients (2 from southern Africa, 2 from Latin America, 5 from the United States of America) are selected each year. These individuals must have received their degree (bachelor's degree minimum in Latin America, master's degree minimum in southern Africa, and a doctoral degree minimum in U.S.A.) in adult education or a closely related field, after January 1, 1995. They must be currently employed in adult education. Awards of $20,000 U. S. per year for two years are given to scholars to support research and/or demonstration projects with promise to advance the field of adult education. The University of Georgia is now soliciting applications for the fifith group of scholars.

Commencing with a retreat in March 2002, this two year program is designed for individuals who are in the early years of their scholarly work. Applicants are sought who have demonstrated promise as a scholar and who propose research, writing, and/or demonstration projects with significant potential to advance the field of adult education. Scholars will undertake a project, submit periodic project reports, participate in an annual retreat for two years, communicate regularly by electronic and/or other means, and design supporting professional development activities.
