Local Advocates to Publish Regularly

Welcome to the premier edition of the Meriwether County Barrier Busters newsletter. This publication will be distributed quarterly to keep you apprised of the activities and scheduled events occurring in our community and surrounding areas. Our focus will be on issues pertaining to citizens with disabilities and their families.

Deborah Smith and Margie McCoy are working in the community as advocacy consultants in cooperation with the Human Services Management Institute of the University of Georgia. They are working under the direction of Phil Chase, director of the Department of Counseling and Human Development Services. Please submit newsletter items to Deborah Smith at monthly Barrier Busters meetings, or mail them to: P.O. Box 953, Greenville, GA 30222. Deadline for submissions for the winter edition will be December 15, 2000.

Training Opportunities

One of the major goals of Barrier Busters is to maximize the opportunities for everyone who wants to know more about advocacy. Throughout the year we will be notifying you of various opportunities for you to participate in educational programs designed especially for citizens with disabilities and their families. There are some funds available to us that can cover transportation costs to attend training functions out of town, and other events have their own scholarships and funding resources included as part of the recruitment package. We will also be planning some events locally that will be beneficial to you.
