Services provided include clerical proficiency tests, unemployment insurance, job referrals and placement, and job information for other cities or states. Counseling is also available in job seeking skills, job retention skills, and career exploration. Dooly County Department of Family & Children Services Workfirst provides employability services for public assistance applicants and recipients. This includes help with the job search process. Easter Seal Society provides vocational evaluations, specific skills training, community based work, adjustment and supported employment through the Division of Rehabilitation Services. The Chamber of Commerce offices provide you with guides to businesses, services, accommodation and recreation facilities in the area you live. As a newcomer or current resident, you can acquire information about specific services needed for persons with disabilities or community support for families and individuals. This Community organization has partnered with residents in Crisp and Dooly Counties in order to "work together in a well-educated, active, attractive, and sustainable community in which families are self-sufficient and children whole." Cordele-Crisp Carnegie Library
The libraries in the county have made accommodations for access. Large print books and specific audiovisual aids are limited but available. Specific requests by disabled persons can be made and the library will make efforts to accommodate needs. Internet access is available. Dooly County Recreation Center
The new Recreation Complex in Vienna (Old Industrial Park) opens on June 4, 1999 and this facility was developed with individuals with disabilities as a priority. The building is fully accessible and all persons in the community are invited to participate in activities. In addition to the complex, the new facility offers a picnic and playground area that has an accessible walkway. If special accommodations need to be made, contact Jay Phillips with the request. The pool in Vienna has been closed for the 1999 season but plans are being made to renovate and provide a lift for access when it is reopened. The Unadilla Recreation Center has a gymnasium and it is accessible also. Crisp Area Arts Alliance
The Arts Alliance promotes art and educational programming within the school system. They promote local artists and sponsor art exhibits or performances for the Cordele community. Easter Seal Society works with independent living choices. The office in Vienna runs two group homes; one home in Vienna is for women and the other home is in Unadilla and houses men. Both homes house persons with mental retardation. The main office is in Albany (1-800-365-4583) and it offers respite care/family support services with Debbie Bailey as contact and services to "at risk" youth with Darrell Sabbs as contact. This organization provides emergency services to families or individuals in the community through communication with the pastors of 42 churches in Crisp County. A three day supply of groceries can be provided and through the Helping Hand Building that is supported by the HBA, clothing can be obtained. They work with Family and Children Services also. Valorette Social and Civic Club
This organization plans community events and the members do community service projects designed to improve the lives of citizens in the community. Scholarships are offered for college students through this organization. Rosalynn Carter Institute For Human Development
The mission of the Rosalynn Carter Institute (RCI) is to understand the process of caregiving and discover new ways to benefit both informal (lay/family) and formal (professional) caregivers for persons with chronic physical illnesses, mental illnesses, difficulties of the frail elderly, or developmental disabilities. The RCI has established a collection of resource materials for use by caregivers available at three locations: the Lake Blackshear Regional Library in Americus; the James earl Carter Library on the campus of Georgia Southwestern State University; and the Rosalynn Carter Institute. Workshops are conducted periodically in various locations on specific topics of interest to formal and informal caregivers. The institute's web site (http://rci.gsw.edu) provides access to on-line support groups, American Caregiver (the institute's newsletter), caregiving links, upcoming events, the Caregiver's Corner, information about the institute and much more. Caring for You, Caring for Me is a published education and support program for caregivers designed to bring formal and informal caregivers together to gain a better understanding of each other's perspectives on what it means to be a caregiver, with the hope that both will improve their caregiving skills. The mission of the Department of Family and Children Services is to provide services for people in need by optimizing all available resources to sustain the family unit and encourage traditional family values thereby promoting self-sufficiency and personal responsibility. The organization provides Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), food stamps, Medicaid, adult and child protective services, family management and support services, subsidized childcare, and foster care. The Health Department offers immunizations, blood pressure checks, tuberculosis clinics, birth control information, lab work, vaccine program, venereal disease treatment and well baby care services. Referral and information about health issues is available also. Dooly Medical Center
An acute care community hospital offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services, including emergency medical care diagnostic services, same day surgery, and intensive care. Residents living in the Dooly County community can access immediate medical help through this center. Crisp Regional Health Services
This hospital offers 24-Hour Physician-staffed emergency services; nursing home, retirement home, home health nursing, hospice and homecare services, extensive inpatient and outpatient diagnostic services; dialysis services; non-emergency medical transportation; intensive care nursing unit; family-centered birthing suites; physical therapy; clinical/pathology lab and cardiodiagnostic services. In 1993, Crisp Regional Hospital was listed in an analysis of hospital charges around the State of Georgia. Only eight hospitals were found to have lower charges. This is a hospital-based program utilizing trained volunteers to offer support, education, and referrals to all families with newborns delivered at Crisp regional Hospital. Healthy Families is a program offering first-time parents with newborns home visitor services delivered by a trained professional who provides support, education and access to community services for a period of 3 to 5 years. The above institutes provide GED and Adult Education classes. The Adult Education classes are free classes geared to help individuals take the GED test. Persons interested in taking classes must apply through Brewton College Admissions (1-800-342-1087) and classes for core requirements towards degrees are offered at the Crisp County High School. This is non-profit agency that offers computer-based adult education for persons of all academic levels. It is instruction designed to offer adult basic education courses as well as GED preparation.
