A Day With Michael Seidman. On Friday, July 18, by special registration, participants can experience a six-hour long restricted admission interactive workshop with editor Michael Seidman. The workshop schedule will consist of a three-hour morning session, lunch with Michael Seidman, and a three hour afternoon session. Topics covered will include:

Outlining: why you do it, why it isn't restrictive.

Characters: Having some sense of what your story is about, choosing characters that suit the needs and how to develop them and what to do with them.

Setting: The story has to take place somewhere...

Description and making places real.

Storyline and Plot: The skeleton is in your outline. The difference between the two.

Dialogue: Getting it right. Uses.

Re-visioning.

Submission process.

Publishing process.

Volunteers from the audience will be asked to bring up a couple of pages of description, someone else with dialogue, etc. Participants will be given the opportunity to bring up pages they're uncertain about, and talk through the issue(s).

The use of dialogue as description: Being aware of how characters speak to tell us who they are

Character recognition: Giving characters their own personality -- not yours

The Art of under-writing: Why leaving things out of a story can enhance it

The Power of rhythm: How to develop rhythm (without knowing how to dance or hum a tune)

These are principles Terry uses in his own work.
