Manuscript Evaluation Submissions closed on June 14, 2002.  The time and location of your manuscript evaluation on Saturday, June 20 will be in your registration packet.

A manuscript critique and a one-on-one meeting with an evaluator are available for $40. Submit a two page synopsis and the first fifteen pages of your manuscript. Must be double spaced and typed or printed in 12 pt font on standard 8 1/2 by 11 inch paper. Secure with a paper clip only. No staples. No binders. 

Label your manuscript as to genre or type and specify your preferred evaluator (We cannot guarantee your first choice).

Ben Beard (editor): Alabama history, civil rights history, African American studies, Southern history, Native American history. All areas of fiction, other than Romance or poetry.

Liza Bolitzer (agency): poetry, documentary film, mainstream and literary fiction, nonfiction books on popular culture.

Doris Booth (editor): mainstream commercial fiction, mystery / thriller / suspense, women's. Some historical fiction.

Tom Colgan (editor): mystery/ thriller/ suspense, so-called "boy books," and nonfiction. Everything other than romances, science fiction, children's books, screenplays or poetry.

Lyn Deardorff (editor): children and young adult, selected self-help, fiction, guides to the South.

David Ebershoff (editor): literary fiction and serious history and biography, but no genre fiction or memoirs.

Melody R. Guy (editor): nonfiction: self-help, inspirational self-help, and memoir. Most types of fiction, but no science fiction or horror.

Judy Long (editor): literary fiction, women's fiction, mystery, non-fiction. Especially anything with a Southern flavor.

Susan Malone (editorial service): literary fiction, women's fiction, most genres (no science fiction, please), and almost all nonfiction.

Amanda Patten (editor): fiction (particularly women's commercial fiction, women's historical fiction, and twenty-something fiction), pop culture (music/television/film), gay/lesbian, and history.

Cricket Pechstein (agency): creative nonfiction, juicy memoirs, high concept nonfiction, mainstream fiction, suspense, crime novels, and thrillers. No poetry, short story collections, sci-fi, fantasy, children's, westerns, textbooks, genre romance or personal manifestos.

Bob Robison (agency): most genres other than science fiction, fantasy or biographies.

Chris Roerden (editorial service): mysteries and most non-fiction.

Jacky Sach (agency): innovations in business, health, exercise, personal growth, animal care, and general lifestyle. Spirituality, self-help, mystery, romance and literary. 

Michael Seidman (editor): anything under the broad spectrum of crime fiction: suspense, mystery of any kind; literary fiction and general mainstream. Will not review BFYR or YA, genre romance, genre fantasy, sf, or action/adventure. Anything else is fine.

Lynn Whittaker (agency): literary fiction, including short story collections; mysteries; creative and narrative nonfiction; serious nonfiction, including history and biography. Women's stories, anything having to do with race and multicultural topics, including international, nature and science, history, sports, and animals. Definitely looking for Southern stories. No children's or young adult books, romance, westerns, science fiction/ fantasy, or plays.

No more than one evaluation per participant will be accepted, please. Must be received no later than June 14. Make check for $40 payable to HAWC Manuscript Evaluations, and mail two copies of the writing sample directly to:
