Recommended Course Sequence

Once admitted to the BSED program, students work with their advisor to determine an appropriate sequence of courses to meet their individual needs; however, there are some guidelines.

  • During the first year in the UGA BSEd in Science Education program, students focus on the science coursework; however, there are certain science education courses may also be taken during this time. These include ESCI 4030, Teaching Science to Students with Special Educational Needs and ESCI 4480, Technological Capabilities for Science Teaching.

  • During the second year in the program, students focus on science education coursework. Science Education courses must be taken in the following sequence:

Fall-ESCI 4460 Methods of Science Teaching and ESCI 5460 Science Education School-Based Internship*

The Methods class meets one evening a week with course assignments linked to the school-based internship. The first semester of the internship requires a 20-25 hour placement in local schools during which time program participants have the opportunity to observe and interact with students and teachers in a variety of middle and high school settings. There is some flexibility in scheduling, with program participants and coordinators working together to meet the needs of all involved.

*ESCI 6030 may be taken in conjunction with these two classes.

Spring-ESCI 4450 Science Curriculum and Learning and ESCI 5460 Science Education School-Based Internship**

The Curriculum class meets one evening per week. As in the fall semester, the internship requires a 20-25 hour per week commitment; however, the structure is different. During the spring, program participants are assigned to one teacher for the entire semester, and they work with that teacher to design and implement lessons, develop appropriate assessments, and complete all of the duties associated with being a science teacher in preparation for obtaining a teaching job.

**All required science courses must be completed prior to enrollment in the second semester of ESCI 5460

Summer-ESCI 5480 Philosophy and Leadership in Science Classroom Practice***

This course is designed to be the capstone experience in the program and must be taken after the internships have been completed.
***ESCI 4480 may be taken in conjunction with this class
