Supporting InductionThe GSTEP Induction Team was charged with creating, organizing and implementing strategies to keep the best and the brightest teachers in the classroom during the most challenging part of their career. The process of induction begins when a prospective teacher expresses an interest in teaching and continues through at least the second year of her or his career. Induction Team ActivitiesThe Induction Team developed the GSTEP Framework for Accomplished Teaching (PDF) to guide, support, and document the growth of teachers. This Framework defines accomplished teaching as a complex, lifelong process of professional development. The Framework was developed through focus groups of over 400 educators across the state. It is grounded in the GSTEP Principles (PDF) : the process principle, the support principle, the ownership principle, the impact principle, the equity principle, the dispositions principle, and the technology principle. The Framework has been piloted extensively in UGA's College of Education. Wanda L. Stitt-Gohdes and Paola Sztajn led these efforts. Their reports can be downloaded here. The BRIDGE (Building Resources: Induction and Development for Georgia Educators), a cutting edge resource and collaborative learning tool, facilitates communication and professional development among preservice and beginning teachers and their mentors and colleagues. It provides extensive resources written by teachers for teachers and organized around the GSTEP Framework and Guiding Questions (DOC) developed by teachers themselves. Click here to visit the BRIDGE. All Georgia educators—P-12, COE, and A&S—are encouraged to study the BRIDGE Questions and create new materials for the BRIDGE, sign up to review submissions, locate existing web sites to link, and use the BRIDGE in their own professional development and collaborations. We're now offering a one-hour PLU course to introduce teachers to the BRIDGE. Contact Sally Ross at saross@coe.uga.edu for more details. The Six District Group is an historic collaboration among the six school districts surrounding The University of Georgia: Barrow County Schools, Clarke County Schools, Jackson County Schools, Madison County Schools, Oconee County Schools, and Oglethorpe County Schools. This group, comprised of representatives from each school district, meets regularly to support the induction of new teachers in their schools. It is currently expanding its efforts through collaborations with Northeast Georgia RESA and other state agencies. Similar initiatives are also in place at our partner universities, Albany State and Valdosta State. The team works closely with the Research & Evaluation Team to gather and use data to design programs that meet the needs of new teachers. The Beginning Teacher Panel is a group of nine early career teachers that are frequently called upon to provide feedback on GSTEP initiatives. This group of talented and dedicated educators, led by public school teachers Mindee Dunagan and Debby Wood, provide valuable input into GSTEP work. Read more about the Beginning Teacher Panel here.
