Shaping Curriculum
The GSTEP Curriculum Teams aim to broaden the common perspective that
equates teacher education with certification programs and to recognize
that quality teaching results from the combination over time of a larger
set of learning experiences. Representing nine different content areas—mathematics
education, science education, English education, social science education,
foreign language education, fine arts, occupational
studies, middle school education, and early childhood education—GSTEP
Curriculum Teams represent a joint effort between colleges of education
and colleges of arts and sciences in improving teacher education.
Curriculum Team Activities
- Strengthening preparation programs through the revision and creation
of courses
- Establishing teaching internships and co-teaching of courses
- Coordinating advising across colleges of arts and science and education
- Offering newly-developed dual degree programs in four secondary disciplines
to attract bright and ambitious students into education and provide
teacher candidates with strong content preparation.
- Functioning autonomously while working with Curriculum Team Chairpersons
to develop work plans and collaborations between the teams and the two
colleges.
- Designing teacher education curricula that are varied, coherent,
integrated, and aligned with current national standards.
- Creating curriculum that will make entering teacher education students
think about their chosen career – about the preparation required
to be a quality teacher and about the realities of being in the classroom.
- Giving students a broad palate of experiences, making them better
prepared for their careers in the classroom.
