HOW TO USE THE LEARNING FRAMEWORK

The Learning Framework is a comprehensive document presenting a wide range of ideas, strategies, and recommended goals relating to mathematics and science education. It is suggested that teachers, schools, districts, and communities examine the full range of options presented in the text and charts, and through a planned and reasoned process, choose those ideas that make the most sense in their local setting and context.

The Learning Framework is not a curriculum guide, but is rather a philosophical premise and resource designed to be used as a reference tool for implementation of the objectives and goals in the Framework.

Part I of the Framework establishes the need for reform in mathematics and science education and presents the philosophical foundation for the Framework's objectives.

Parts II and III explore the nature of mathematics and science education, and introduce the concept of the Capacity Cube, which is a graphic illustration of the multidimensional aspects of mathematics and science instruction. Included in both sections are detailed tables summarizing important information.

Part IV examines the objectives of improved mathematics and science instruction from a classroom and teacher perspective.

Especially important to users may be the tables found in Sections II and III, which can serve as concise reference tools for implementation of the Framework.
