The development of fluent and automatic reading is considered a primary educational goal for elementary school age children. The National Reading Panel (2000) defines reading fluency as the ability to read quickly, accurately, and with expression. Children who can read fluently tend to have better comprehension of what they read than those who cannot. The purposes of the project are:
- to understand the development of reading fluency
- to develop better classroom approaches to enhancing reading fluency in early elementary school
- to develop better approaches to fostering reading fluency in struggling readers
- to develop approaches that families can use to help their children learn to read fluently.
