COE Russell H. Yeany, Jr., Research Award

Important: the Awards Committee will not accept late or incomplete dossiers. It is the responsibility of the nominator to ensure the dossier is complete and submitted by the College of Education’s deadline.

Purpose and Description


Title: Russell H. Yeany, Jr., Research Award
Purpose: The Russell H. Yeany, Jr., Research Award was established in 1998 to recognize outstanding research and was made possible by a gift from Russell H. Yeany, Jr., dean emeritus of the College, and other donors, whose intent was to recognize faculty members’ outstanding cumulative research.
Deadlines: All nominations should be submitted to the Office of the Associate Dean for Research by noon on January 17. Should this date fall on a weekend or holiday, nominations should be submitted the next working day.
Eligibility: At the time of nomination, the nominee must hold the rank of tenured professor and have completed a minimum of three years of service to the University of Georgia. Awardees are ineligible for re-nomination. Current members of the Faculty Senate Awards Committee are not eligible.
Recognition: Recipients of the Yeany Research Award receive a plaque and a grant for professional development. The recipient of the award will be announced at the College’s Spring Celebration.

Application Procedures and Documentation


With the approval of the candidate, nominations may be initiated by a department or any group of three or more faculty members.

The Faculty Senate Awards Committee will review nominees.

It will be the responsibility of the nominators to assemble a full dossier on the nominee, including documentation of the following criteria for selection:

  • The nominee’s work reflects a logical and coherent theme of sustained research and creative activity that has been cumulative in its impact and significance.
  • The documentation provides clear evidence of outstanding contributions that have attained widespread national or international impact and visibility.
  • The nominee has demonstrated scholarly leadership with respect to his or her peers and applicable research or creative community.

The dossier should contain:

  • a cover sheet (use the Yeany Research Award Cover Sheet);
  • a one-page letter of nomination to be written and signed by one or more nominators that summarizes the nominee’s qualifications for the award.
  • a description (not to exceed three single-spaced pages with typeface no smaller than 11-point) of research or creative activity upon which the nomination is based.
  • documentation showing the recognition the nominee’s research or creative activity has received and the impact it has made on the field. This includes reviews, citations, external funding, previous awards, etc. The documentation portion of the nomination (not to exceed two pages single-spaced with typeface no smaller than 11-point) should only cite recognitions made within the previous three years.
  • three letters in support of the nomination from peers outside the University community.
  • the nominee’s current curriculum vita (single-spaced with typeface no smaller than 11-point).

Please submit the application as a PDF file electronically via email attachment to gmason@uga.edu or PDF file on CD sent through campus mail to the Associate Dean for Research Office, c/o Faculty Awards Committee Secretary.

Please name the nomination file as [Last Name]_[First Name]_RYRA.  For example, the nomination for John Smith for Russell H. Yeany, Jr., Research Award would be named as “Smith_John_RYRA.” Please label all separate attachments clearly.

Evaluation Criteria and Procedures


  • The Faculty Senate Awards Committee will be the review and selection body for this award.
  • Decisions will be based solely on the selection criteria contained in the nomination packet.
  • The Committee reserves the right not to recommend an award, if no nominations are acceptable.
