COE Outstanding Teaching Award for the University’s Honors Day
Important: the Awards Committee will not accept late or incomplete dossiers. It is the responsibility of the nominator to ensure the dossier is complete and submitted by the College of Education’s deadline.
Purpose and Description
| Title: | Outstanding Teaching Award for the University’s Honors Day |
| Purpose: | The College of Education will select outstanding teachers to be recognized at the University’s Honors Day. The presentation of the award will be made at a special College of Education function. |
| Deadlines: | All nominations should be submitted to the Office of the Associate Dean for Research by noon on January 17. Should this date fall on a weekend or holiday, nominations should be submitted the next working day. |
| Eligibility: | All full-time tenured and tenure track faculty are eligible. An awardee is ineligible for re-nomination for three years.Current members of the Faculty Senate Awards Committee are not eligible. |
| Recognition: | Recipients of the award receive a plaque or other memento. Presentation of the award will be made at a special College of Education function, and recipients will be recognized at the UGA Honors Day ceremonies. |

Application Procedures and Documentation
With the approval of the candidate, nominations may be made by any group of ten or more full-time students, any group of five or more alumni, by student petition from a student honorary or professional group recognized by the College of Education, or by a group of any three faculty members.
The Faculty Senate Awards Committee will review nominees.
It will be the responsibility of the nominators to assemble a full dossier on the nominee, including documentation of the following criteria for selection:
- The classroom teaching competence of the nominee is clearly outstanding.
- The candidate has a well-defined teaching philosophy and approach to education.
- The candidate has superior teaching evaluations from students, peers, or alumni.
- The candidate has made a positive impact on students.
The dossier should contain:
- a cover sheet (use the Outstanding Teaching Cover Sheet);
- a one-page vita (single-spaced page with typeface no smaller than 11-point). This vita should include information relative to the following:
- Publications related to teaching (with several examples)
- Presentations related to teaching (with several examples)
- Previous honors/recognition for excellence in teaching
- one-page letter of nomination (single-spaced page with typeface no smaller than 11-point). This letter is to be written by the nominators and should define the nominee’s qualifications for the award. Clear indication of the source of the nomination should be given, including the signatures of each nominator.
- the body of the nomination (single-spaced page with typeface no smaller than 11-point) is limited to no more than three pages. The points listed below must be included. Other points may also be included at the discretion of the nominators.
- Rationale for considering the nominee to be an outstanding teacher.
- Nominee’s personal statement regarding teaching. This should include a reflective self-evaluation of the nominee’s strengths and growth possibilities relative to the teaching process.
- Student evaluation of the nominee’s teaching with an emphasis on the three years preceding the nomination. The evaluations may be either of a qualitative or quantitative nature and may be developed at the discretion of the nominators. Please include mean ratings for overall course & instructor evaluation for courses taught during this period.
- Summary of former or present accomplishments, if applicable.
Please submit the application as a PDF file electronically via email attachment to gmason@uga.edu or PDF file on CD sent through campus mail to the Associate Dean for Research Office, c/o Faculty Awards Committee Secretary.
Please name the nomination file as [Last Name]_[First Name]_OTHD. For example, the nomination for John Smith for Outstanding Teaching Award for the University’s Honors Day would be named as “Smith_ John_OTHD.” Please label all separate attachments clearly.

Evaluation Criteria and Procedures
- The Faculty Senate Awards Committee will be the review and selection body for this award.
- Decisions will be based solely on the selection criteria contained in the nomination packet.
- The Committee reserves the right not to recommend an award if no acceptable nominations is received.
