COE Ira E. Aaron Award for Teaching Excellence and Collegiality

Important: the Awards Committee will not accept late or incomplete dossiers. It is the responsibility of the nominator to ensure the dossier is complete and submitted by the College of Education’s deadline.

Purpose and Description


Title: Ira E. Aaron Award for Teaching Excellence and Collegiality
Purpose: The College of Education Ira E. Aaron Award for Teaching Excellence and Collegiality (formerly known as the COE Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence) was established in 1999 by Dr. Aaron. This award recognizes outstanding teaching by a faculty member who sets an example for collegiality.
Deadlines: All nominations should be submitted to the Office of the Associate Dean for Research by noon on January 17.  Should this date fall on a weekend or holiday, nominations should be submitted the next working day.
Eligibility: All full-time tenured faculty (associate and full professors) are eligible.  Nominee must hold the rank of associate or full professor at the time they are nominated.  An awardee is ineligible for re-nomination for five years. Current members of the Faculty Senate Awards Committee are not eligible.
Recognition: The awardee will receive a plaque, recognition by the College at the Spring Celebration, and an instructional grant.

Application Procedures and Documentation


With the approval of the candidate, nominations may be made by a group of any three faculty members.  It will be the responsibility of the nominators to assemble a full dossier on the nominee, including documentation of the following criteria for selection:

  • The classroom teaching competence of the nominee is clearly outstanding.
  • The candidate has a well-defined teaching philosophy and approach to education.
  • The candidate has a distinguished record of collegiality and service to the department, the College, and/or the University.
  • The candidate has made a positive impact on students and has superior evaluations from students and/or alumni.

The dossier should contain:

  • a cover sheet (use the Ira E. Aaron Award Cover Sheet);
  • one-page vita (single-spaced with typeface no smaller than 11-point). This vita should include information relative to the following:
    • Selected publications within the last five years.
    • Selected presentations within the last five years.
    • Previous honors/recognition for excellence in teaching.
    • Selected examples of strong support of College and/or University.
  • one-page letter of nomination (single-spaced with typeface no smaller than 11-point). This letter is to be written by the nominators and should define the nominee’s qualifications for the award. Clear indication of the source of the nomination should be given, including the signatures of each nominator.
  • the body of the nomination (single-spaced with typeface no smaller than 11-point). It is limited to no more than three pages and should include allof the following components:
    • Rationale for considering the nominee to be an outstanding teacher.
    • Nominee’s personal statement regarding teaching, including a self-evaluation of the nominee’s strengths and potential for growth in teaching.
    • Description of the nominee’s collegiality as evidenced by a summary of activities in which the nominee demonstrates strong support for the advancement of the College and/or University.
    • Student evaluations of the nominee’s teaching with an emphasis on the five years preceding the nomination. Please include mean ratings for overall course and instructor evaluation for courses taught during this period. The evaluations may be of a qualitative and/or quantitative nature.
    • Summary of current or former student accomplishments as it relates to the impact made by the nominee.

Please submit the application as a PDF file electronically via email attachment to gmason@uga.edu or PDF file on CD sent through campus mail to the Associate Dean for Research Office, c/o Faculty Awards Committee Secretary.

Please name the nomination file as [Last Name]_[First Name]_ATEC.  For example, the nomination for John Smith for Ira E. Aaron Award for Teaching Excellence and Collegiality would be named as “Smith_ John_ATEC.”  Please label all separate attachments clearly.

Evaluation Criteria and Procedures


  • The Faculty Senate Awards Committee will be the review and selection body for this award.
  • Decisions will be based solely on the selection criteria contained in the nomination packet.
  • The Committee reserves the right not to recommend an award, if no nominations are acceptable.
