Purpose and Description


Title: Jenny Penney Oliver Diversity Award
Purpose: The purpose of the COE Jenny Penney Oliver Diversity Award is to recognize faculty members whose research, teaching and/or service promotes a more diverse local, university and/or global community. According to NCATE, diversity is defined as “differences among groups of people and individuals based on ethnicity, race, socioeconomic status, gender, exceptionalities, language, religion, sexual orientation, and geographic area.”The COE multicultural mission statement can be found at:

Deadlines: All nominations should be submitted to the Office of the Associate Dean for Research by noon on January 17.  Should this date fall on a weekend or holiday, nominations should be submitted the next working day.
Eligibility: Nominee must hold the rank of full-time tenured, tenure-track, or career-track faculty at the time they are nominated.  Current members of the Faculty Senate Awards Committee are not eligible.
Recognition: The recipient of the award will receive a professional development award and a plaque. The award will be effective for the academic year and will be presented at the College’s Spring Celebration.

Application Procedures and Documentation


With the approval of the candidate, nominations may be made by any faculty member in the College of Education. All nominations must be prepared according to the guidelines presented below. Since members serving on the awards committee may not be experts in the nominee’s field, it is important that nominations are submitted in language understandable to faculty in other areas and disciplines.

It will be the responsibility of the nominator to assemble a full dossier on the nominee, including documentation of the following criteria for selection:

  • The nominee’s research, teaching, and/or service work reflects a commitment to and provides clear evidence of contributions to diversity.
  • The nominee contributes significantly to the climate of diversity at the college and in the community.

The dossier should contain:

  • a cover sheet (use the Jenny Penney Oliver Diversity Award Cover Sheet);
  • a one-page (single-spaced page with typeface no smaller than 11-point) letter of nomination written and signed by one or more nominators that summarizes the nominee’s qualifications for the award (single-spaced page with typeface no smaller than 11-point).
  • a description (not to exceed three single-spaced pages with typeface no smaller than 11-point) of teaching, research, service and/or other creative activity upon which the nomination is based. This can be prepared by the nominee or his/her nominator(s).
  • a six-page current vita (single-spaced page with typeface no smaller than 11-point).

Please submit the application as a PDF file electronically via email attachment to gmason@uga.edu or PDF file on CD sent through campus mail to the Associate Dean for Research Office, c/o Faculty Awards Committee Secretary.

Please name the nomination file as [Last Name]_[First Name]_JPODA. For example, the nomination for John Smith for Faculty Diversity Award would be named as “Smith_John_JPODA.”  Please label all separate attachments clearly.

Nomination packages, including documentation, are due in the Office of the Associate Dean for Research (G-10 Aderhold Hall) by noon on January 17each year. Should this date fall on a weekend or holiday, nominations must be submitted by noon of the next working day.

Evaluation Criteria and Procedures


  • The Faculty Senate Awards Committee will be the review and selection body for this award.
  • Decisions will be based solely on the selection criteria contained in the nomination packet.
  • One award will be given annually.
  • In a given year, the Committee may choose not to recommend an award, if no nominations are acceptable.
