COE Donald O. Schneider Award for Mentoring
Important: the Awards Committee will not accept late or incomplete dossiers. It is the responsibility of the nominator to ensure the dossier is complete and submitted by the College of Education’s deadline.
Purpose and Description
| Title: | Donald O. Schneider Award for Mentoring |
| Purpose: | The University of Georgia College of Education has established the Donald O. Schneider Award for Mentoring. The award is named to honor former College administrator Donald O. Schneider, a facilitator, a collaborator, a mentor, and a man committed to public schools and teaching. The purpose of the award is to recognize excellence in mentoring of University of Georgia students. |
| Deadlines: | All nominations should be submitted to the Office of the Associate Dean for Research by noon on January 17. Should this date fall on a weekend or holiday, nominations should be submitted the next working day. |
| Eligibility: | Eligibility for the award will be limited to school and community-based professionals and non-tenure, career-track faculty (e.g., supervising teachers and academic professionals) engaged in mentoring of graduate or undergraduate students in the College. Past awardees and tenure-track faculty are not eligible. Current members of the Faculty Senate Awards Committee are not eligible. |
| Recognition: | The awardee will receive a plaque, recognition by the College at the Spring Celebration, and an allowance for professional travel or development. |

Application Procedures and Documentation
Each department in the College may forward to the Office of the Associate Dean for Research one nomination per year. The Faculty Senate Awards Committee will review nominees.
Departments should submit the following for each candidate:
The dossier should contain:
- a cover sheet (use the Donald O. Schneider Mentoring Award Cover Sheet);
- a letter of nomination detailing the nominee’s major contributions through mentoring. The letter should contain evidence of student and/or faculty assessment of the nominee’s mentoring activities. Examples of other potential contributions include use of innovative techniques for mentoring: consistent, high-quality mentoring over a period of time; and leadership of other professional contributions through mentoring. The letter of nomination should not exceed five single-spaced pages with typeface no smaller than 11-point;
- a personal statement from the nominee describing the personal value of mentoring and how it contributed to his/her professional growth. The personal statement should not exceed one single-spaced page with typeface no smaller than 11-point.
- a six-page current vita (single-spaced page with typeface no smaller than 11-point).
Please submit the application as a PDF file electronically via email attachment to gmason@uga.edu or PDF file on CD sent through campus mail to the Associate Dean for Research Office, c/o Faculty Awards Committee Secretary.
Please name the nomination file as [Last Name]_[First Name]_DSAM. For example, the nomination for John Smith for Donald O. Schneider Award for Mentoring would be named as “Smith_John_DSAM.” Please label all separate attachments clearly.

Nomination packages, including documentation, are due in the Office of the Associate Dean for Research (G-10 Aderhold Hall) by noon on January 17each year. Should this date fall on a weekend or holiday, nominations must be submitted by noon of the next working day.
Evaluation Criteria and Procedures
- The Faculty Senate Awards Committee will be the review and selection body for this award.
- Decisions will be based solely on the selection criteria contained in the nomination packet.
- The Committee reserves the right not to recommend an award, if no nominations are acceptable.
