Description

The Graduate Council is the policy making body of the Graduate Faculty. The Council functions on behalf of the Graduate Faculty in all matters within the authority of that Faculty. See the Graduate Council Bylaws on the Graduate School website for a complete description.

Composition

There is one representative on the Graduate Council from each of the 14 college/schools plus 17 at-large representatives based on graduate enrollment. The COE has 5 members total: one COE representative and 4 at-large representatives. All members must belong to the Graduate Faculty.

Elections:

Elections should be held in March, not in Fall Semester, to ensure that all who are Graduate Faculty at that time can be considered in the elections. The Graduate Council sends a memo to Deans in March asking that Graduate Faculty, within two weeks, elect nominees to replace representatives whose terms will expire. The Graduate Faculty in the College elect the COE representative from a slate of nominees prepared by the Nominating Committee and approved by the Senate and the Senate President. The Graduate Faculty in the College nominate 2 Graduate Faculty members in the College to be put forward for each member-at-large vacancy. Then the entire Graduate Faculty at the University vote to determine which of the COE nominees will fill that vacancy. There can be only one representative from each Department on the Committee.

The Dean of the Graduate School appoints council members to council committees: Administrative Committee, Admission & Retention Committee, Appointment & Reappointment Committee, Curriculum Committee, and Program Committee.
