Senate Steering Committee

Description
The Steering Committee provides leadership for the Faculty Senate and determines Senate agendas. See the Faculty Senate Bylaws for a complete description.

Composition

5 members from different Departments, when possible, including the Faculty Senate President, the Faculty Senate President-Elect, and 3 Senators elected by the Senate.

Standing Committees

Administrator Evaluation Committee

Description

The Administrator Evaluation Committee is a Standing Committee of the Faculty Senate. It initiates and oversees the process of evaluating the Dean, Associate/Assistant Deans, and Department Heads in the College. See the Faculty Senate Bylaws for a complete description.

Composition

4 members from different departments including the Faculty Senate President and 3 Senators elected by the Senate.

Term

Staggered 2-year term.

 

Academic Appeals Committee

Description

The Academic Appeals Committee is a Standing Committee of the Faculty Senate. The Committee hears and acts upon appeals cases involving graduate and undergraduate student courses and programs that cannot be resolved at the Department level. See the Faculty Senate Bylaws for a complete description.

Composition

5 faculty members from different Departments, 3 elected by College faculty and 2 appointed by the Director of Student Services from Departments that have teacher certification programs or undergraduate majors. Department Heads may not serve on this Committee.

Curriculum Committee

Description

The Curriculum Committee is a Standing Committee of the Faculty Senate. It makes recommendations to the Dean on graduate and undergraduate curricular matters. See the Faculty Senate Bylaws for a complete description.

6 members with Graduate Faculty status from different Departments elected by College faculty. Three members must represent undergraduate programs.

Scholarship Committee

Description

The Scholarship Committee is a Standing Committee of the Faculty Senate. It selects recipients for scholarships awarded to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the College. See the Faculty Senate Bylaws for a complete description.

5 members including 4 faculty members from different Departments elected by College faculty and 1 student member appointed by the Director of Student Services.

Nominating Committee

Description

The Nominating Committee solicits nominations and oversees elections for Officers of the Faculty Senate, The Faculty Senate Steering Committee, Standing Committees of the Faculty Senate, and University Committees on which the College has representatives. It also prepares slates of candidates for Faculty Senate Special Committees for the Dean’s consideration. See the Faculty Senate Bylaws for a complete description.

6 faculty members from different Departments elected by College faculty.

Awards Committee

Description

The Awards Committee is a Special Committee of the Faculty Senate. It selects nominees and/or recipients for awards in teaching, research, and service that are sponsored by the College and the University of Georgia. See the Faculty Senate Bylaws for a complete description.

Composition

9 members, one from each Department, appointed by the Dean in consultation with the Faculty Senate President from a slate of candidates presented by the Faculty Senate. Previous award recipients are expected to serve on this Committee.

Term

Staggered 2-year term.

 

Graduate Faculty Appointment/Reappointment

Description

The Graduate Faculty Appointment/Reappointment Committee is a Special Committee of the Faculty Senate. It reviews applications for appointment and reappointment to the Graduate Faculty and, according to the Graduate School’s criteria, makes recommendations to the Dean. Composition

9 tenured full or associate professors with Graduate Faculty status, one from each Department, appointed by the Dean in consultation with the Faculty Senate President from a slate of candidates presented by the Faculty Senate.

Dispute Resolution Committee

Description

The Dispute Resolution Committee is a Special Committee of the Faculty Senate. It addresses disputes
among members of the College faculty according to policies and procedures established by the University of Georgia Statues, the Board of Regents Policy Manual, and the Dispute Resolution Policy. See the Faculty Senate Bylaws for a complete description.

Composition

3 tenured faculty members, 2 of which must hold the rank of Professor. Members are appointed from a pool of eligible faculty by the Dean and the Associate Dean for Faculty, Administration and Finance in consultation with the Faculty Senate President.

Term

The committee is organized when needed and serves for the duration of its involvement in the dispute.

 

Promotion & Tenure Committee

Description

The Promotion and Tenure Committee is a Special Committee of the Faculty Senate. It represents the Faculty in a fair, appropriate, professional, and objective manner as it considers faculty applications for promotion and tenure and makes recommendations to the Dean according to the University of Georgia’s Guidelines for Appointment, Promotion and Tenure. The work of this Committee’s is brief but intense and, since it significantly affects the careers of Faculty, is a high priority for committee members. Composition

9 tenured full professors, one from each Department, and 2 tenured associate professors from the College at large appointed by the Dean in consultation with the Faculty Senate President from a slate of candidates presented by the Faculty Senate. Names of committee members are revealed in the Committee Chair’s report to the Senate at its last meeting of the year. The Dean or the Dean’s designee is an ex-officio, non- voting member of the Committee.

Term

Professors serve staggered a 2-year term, and Associate Professors serve a 1-year term.

 

University Committees

University Council

 

Membership


Description

The University Council exercises legislative power on matters of general educational policy and, consistent with Policies of the Board of Regents, makes rules and regulations it deems necessary for the promotion of the educational interests of the University. See the University Council Bylaws for a complete description.

Composition

Each school/college has representatives proportional to the number of faculty in all the University’s
schools and colleges. Since at least 2005, the COE has had 11 members on the University Council. Any member of the faculty with academic rank is eligible. Though the University Council makes no recommendation in this regard, the Faculty Senate recommends that the College’s representatives be distributed across the various departments. University Council Standing Committees

 

Membership


Description

Each University Council Standing Committee has different responsibilities. The chart below does not list all University Council Standing Committees. See theUniversity Council Bylaws for a description of each committee.

Composition

The composition of each standing committee varies. As indicated in the chart below, the COE elects members to some committees, and COE members on the University Council elect representatives from that group  to others. See the University Council bylaws for the composition of each committee.

Term    The following was taken from the University Council Bylaws in 2006.

“Except where stated otherwise in the bylaws, faculty membership on standing committees shall be for staggered two-year terms. Student members may serve one term and be eligible for re-election if re-elected to the Council.
“The term of membership on Council committees by elected non-council members shall be specified by the respective school or college.”

 

Graduate Council

 

Membership


Description

The Graduate Council is the policymaking body of the Graduate Faculty. The Council functions on behalf of the Graduate Faculty in all matters within the authority of that Faculty. See the Graduate Council Bylaws on the Graduate School website for a complete description.

Composition

There is one representative on the Graduate Council from each of the 14 college/schools plus 17 at-large representatives based on graduate enrollment. The COE has 5 members total: one COE representative and 4 at-large representatives. All members must belong to the Graduate Faculty.

Elections:

Elections should be held in March, not in Fall Semester, to ensure that all who are Graduate Faculty at that time can be considered in the elections. The Graduate Council sends a memo to Deans in March asking that Graduate Faculty, within two weeks, elect nominees to replace representatives whose terms will expire. The Graduate Faculty in the College elect the COE representative from a slate of nominees prepared by the Nominating Committee and approved by the Senate and the Senate President. The Graduate Faculty in the College nominate 2 Graduate Faculty members in the College to be put forward for each member-at-large vacancy. Then the entire Graduate Faculty at the University vote to determine which of the COE nominees will fill that vacancy. There can be only one representative from each Department on the Committee.

The Dean of the Graduate School appoints council members to council committees: Administrative Committee, Admission & Retention Committee, Appointment & Reappointment Committee, Curriculum Committee, and Program Committee. Faculty Advisory to the President

 

Membership

Description

This committee is described in the University Statutes, “Article VI. Faculty Advisory Committee.” Its purpose is “to provide for the orderly voicing of suggestions regarding matters of concern to the University community and shall furnish a channel for communication between the faculty and the administrative offices of the University.” See the University Statues, Article 6, for a complete description.

Composition

The College has 2 members who must be full or associate professors, elected by COE faculty with 10 days notice from the President’s office. “The faculty with academic rank from each school or college of the University shall elect one member of the Faculty Advisory Committee, except that four members shall be elected from the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, two members shall be elected from the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, and two members shall be elected from the College of Education.” “Members of the Faculty Advisory Committee shall be elected in the spring semester preceding their term of service. The dean of each school or college shall conduct an appropriate election of Advisory Committee members and shall provide to the faculty with academic rank 10 days advance notice of such election.”
