Description: The Paragraph Writing Strategy is targeted towards students in grades 4 through 12 who struggle with written expression as basic as the development of soundly written paragraphs of different types (e.g. narrative, compare and contrast, etc.).
This three-day workshop will introduce teachers to the foundations of the Strategic Instruction Model® and will prepare them to implement research-based interventions to help students acquire strategies for writing and editing a variety of types of paragraphs for effective written communication. It is a strategy for organizing ideas related to a topic, planning the point of view and verb tense to be used in the paragraph, planning the sequence in which ideas will be expressed, and writing a variety of topic, detail, and conclusion sentences.
The third day of the workshop will involve participants preparing and creating student “cue cards” and folders, aligning the strategy’s skills with the CCSS relevant to their grade level, and further readying implementation with the goal of participants being able to begin the strategy with their students directly after the workshop is completed.
Please note: Participants in this workshop ideally would have already received professional development in the SIM® Sentence Writing Strategy, the precursor to the Paragraph Writing Strategy, in order to provide students with the minimum sentence writing skill prerequisites needed to successfully write paragraphs. The Sentence Writing Strategy Workshop is scheduled for September 26-27, 2013 at River’s Crossing in Athens.
Cost: $375: Registration fee includes instructor’s and student lessons manuals (Intructor’s Manual features a systematic sequence of instructional procedures; the Student Lessons Manual features exercises that correspond to the instructional procedures), packets of training materials, a copy of the CD Paragraph Writing Strategy Student lessons, as well as supplemental handouts and PowerPoints sent electronically following the workshop to support teacher implementation.
Successful completion of this workshop will provide 2 PLU’s for eligible participants.
