The Master of Arts in Teaching: Early Childhood (Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 5--ECCO)
The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree program is intended for individuals who hold a bachelors degree and wish to gain teaching certification while working on a master’s degree. The MAT in Early Childhood Education culminates in certification for Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 5.
This is a non-cohort program that can be completed either part-time or full-time, though it does include one semester of full-time student teaching. New students are admitted once a year and begin the program in the Maymester session. All application materials must be received by the third Friday in January. Most required courses are offered only on the Athens campus.
The degree program normally requires 51 semester hours. However, depending on the range of courses taken as an undergraduate, individual students may be required to take more coursework to make up for deficiencies as identified in advisement. Extra coursework will be designed to meet the expectations for certification as an elementary school teacher.
