Academic Programs - Middle School Education
Admission Policies
The Middle School Education major is designated as a high demand major at the University of Georgia. The University identifies high-demand majors as those that receive or expect to receive more applications for major status from fully qualified rising juniors than the program can accommodate without endangering the quality of instruction offered.
Application Deadlines
The Middle School Education program admits no more than sixty students per application round. Applications to the program are accepted once per academic year. The deadline to apply is the third Friday in January each spring semester.
Eligibility Requirements
Minimum requirements for application include the following:
- No more than nine hours of core coursework remaining (in-progress courses do not count toward the nine hours)
- 2.80 GPA (overall and cumulative)
- Completion of (or current enrollment in) EFND 2110 or equivalent course
- Passing scores on or exemption from the GACE Basic Skills Assessment (www.gace.nesinc.com).
The program must receive GACE scores no later than the application deadline. Applicants may exempt the GACE if they have earned a qualifying score on one of these tests:
- SAT (Critical Reading and Math scores combined ≥ 1000)
- ACT (English and Math scores combined ≥ 43)
- GRE (Verbal and Quantitative scores combined ≥ 1030).
Application Requirements and Materials
The faculty selects students from all of the applicants who meet the minimum requirements for entry into the program. The following artifacts, which are weighted equally, will be evaluated:
- Applicant statement. Applicants must write three, double-spaced statements responding to the following questions. Total length of all three responses combined should not exceed 1,000 words.
- What does exemplary (add the name of your primary content specialization area here; i.e. Mathematics) teaching look like in the middle grades?
- What are some of the ways that you believe teaching in the middle grades would be different than teaching either early childhood or high school?
- You will likely teach many students with ethnic, racial, socioeconomic, linguistic and religious backgrounds different from your own. What are some issues that you will need to consider in meeting the needs of students with diverse backgrounds?
- Resume. Applicants must provide a standard resume including educational background, work experience, extracurricular activities, community involvement, etc. Experiences not related to education and experiences dating back through high school may be included.
