Gifted In-Field Endorsement

General Requirements

An individual with the Gifted In-Field Endorsement is considered in-field to provide direct instruction to gifted students only in the field(s) of his/her valid teaching certificate or to serve as a facilitator of gifted in grades P-12. Although the University of Georgia has an approved program on file with the State Board of Education (SBOE), the University does not grant In-field endorsement; this is a function of the SBOE. To add Gifted, In-Field, an applicant shall:

  • Possess a professional certificate at the bachelor’s or higher certification level in any teaching field, in the service field of School Counselor or the leadership field of Administration and Supervision, provided that a teaching field prerequisite has been established;
  • Successfully complete the following four courses, or their equivalents:
  1. EPSY 7060 -Assessment of Gifted Children and Youth
  2. EPSY 7110 -Characteristics of Gifted Children and Youth
  3. EPSY 7230 -Strategies and Materials for the Gifted
  4. EPSY 7250 -Program and Curriculum Development for the Gifted

Probationary Certificates

The SBOE will issue Probationary (PA) Certificates for endorsement only after 6 semester hours of the courses and one year of teaching experience have been completed.

Salary

Since July 1, 1993, individuals have a single certification level which is to be used in reference to the State Board of Education salary schedule. The Local Unit of Administration makes the decision on the local supplement.

Non-Degree Students

Students who are interested in obtaining Gifted In-Field Endorsement only may register for the courses only after they have been admitted to the Graduate School of the University of Georgia. The student may either be pursuing a graduate degree in another program or department, or may apply to the graduate school for non-degree status in the Department of Educational Psychology, GCE PRogram. Non-degree students should contact Dr. Meg Hines, 706-542-5774 (mhines@uga.edu) to be cleared for registration.
