Course Rotations | Cohort 3 | Cohort 4 | Cohort 5 | Cohort 6 | Ed.S. Certified
I don't know which cohort I'm in!

This is not a substitute for OASIS! Check online to be sure of your details.

Let me know if you find mistakes; I will add details as they seem necessary.
Graduate School Policy on Continuous Enrollment

General Information
Most important: Don't wait until the last minute.

Touch base with your advisor at least once per semester.  Also, keep abreast of Grad School Deadlines. If you enrolled  Fall 2006 or later, consult the Graduate School Continuous Enrollment rules before you take a semester "off."

If you're following the Cohort Plan, you will probably hear all you need to know in Saturday class. Once you know what you're going to take, email your advisor this information:
  • Name
  • All courses you've had up to now (this degree only)
  • What you're taking now
  • What you want to take next
  • When you plan to graduate
With these few information items, the advisor can usually check your status and clear you for registration. He/she will let you know if more discussion is necessary.

My advisees: you may simply write a note and leave it in your folder, or email - your choice.

Remember: Don't wait until the last minute.  You must be cleared by your advisor, and professors often disappear to points unknown for days at a time!  If you take care of registration well in advance, you will minimize your worries.

Electives of interest to SLM folks:
READ 8100, Inquiry-Based Literacy (Fall 06, Mondays, 4:40 -7:40) will primarily focus this year on the work of Paulo Freire, Mikhail Bakhtin, bell hooks, & Louise Rosenblatt. In examining the concepts of dialogue and transaction as viewed by these theorists, class members will develop understandings and theories regarding inquiry pedagogy and critical inquiry pedagogy. They will then be able to apply those understandings and theories to literacy classrooms. Readings could include  Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Pedagogy of the Heart, Teaching to Transgress, Teaching Community, Discourse in the Novel, Problems of Dostoevsky's Poetics, Literature as Exploration,  and  The Reader, the Text, the Poem.  Instructor: Dr. Bob Fecho, bfecho@uga.edu.  MAF's comments: Dr. Fecho has a reputation as an excellent teacher. This course might be interesting for Ed.S. students who need electives, or for any SLM student needing a challenging elective. Note the traditional campus format.  Comment from an alum: "This is definitely a doctoral level class" -- i.e., expect a significant challenge.

ESOL Endorsement

As of 11-10-05, anyone with a Clear Renewable certificate in any area (T, S, or L) may add the ESOL endorsement.  In other words, a Teaching field is not a necessary precursor. Some students may want to consider pursuing the ESOL endorsement, which consists of ELAN 7730, ELAN 7040, ELAN 7630.  ELAN 7630 is a particulary relevant SLM elective, because it deals with material design and teaching methods to use with non-native English speakers.  For more information about about the ESOL program, work with the Department of Language and Literacy Education.

Reading Endorsement

it is now possible to add a Reading Endorsement to any teaching certificate in Georgia. All courses for the Reading Endorsement must have been completed after July 1, 2000 when the endorsement went into effect! The Department of Reading Education has been approved by the state Professional Standards Commission to offer the Endorsement to any student completing the following 3 courses:

READ 6010 Foundations of Reading Instruction (online or on campus)
READ 6020 Children With Reading Problems (online or on campus)

and ONE of the following courses depending upon whether the Endorsement is sought respectively at the elementary, middle, or secondary school level:

READ 6420 Literacy Development and Instruction in Early Childhood (online or on campus)
READ 6070 Middle School Reading (online or on campus)
READ 6030 Teaching Reading in the Secondary School

For more information on the Reading Education program, contact the Department of Language and Literacy Education.

Continuous Enrollment Policy

The Graduate School has decreed a new policy that requires students to enroll in at least one course each semester, with the exception of summers.  There are procedures for waiving this requirement on a case-by-case basis, and red tape is required to gain approval.  Please research the policy on the Graduate School web site and through your advisor if this situation applies to you.  We will be learning about it as we go along.  It takes effect in Fall of 2007 for students enrolled now (Spring of 2006), and in Fall of 2006 for students beginning from Summer 2006 on.  If you have any doubt or concern that you might fall under this rule, please do some research and talk to your advisor.
