Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate

Mission Statement:

The current faculty and students aspire to create innovative doctoral programs, rooted in strong existing programs, ones that will be considered the new standard of quality for doctoral education in the discipline.

The Carnegie Initiative has been in place at UGA for the last three years.  In 2004, the faculty leadership team associated with the Carnegie Initiative organized the first ever, college-wide graduate student research conference.  This continues to be an annual conference.  The conference is an opportunity for students to meet others across the college with similar research interests, get feedback from peers and faculty, and to gain experience presenting their own research.  Over 30 students from departments throughout the college participate in the conference each year.  The winners of the 2004 conference included Lori Aultman, Ju Sung Jun, Jamie Calkin, Haixia Xu, Steve Bickmore, and Steve Broglio.  At the 2005 research conference, awards were given for both qualitative and quantitative presentations and the winners included Justus Inyega, Mi-young Webb, Feiming Li, Peter Rich, Michael Barbour, Sangwon Kim, and Sun-joo Cho.

The 2006 graduate student research conference will be held on May 2, 2006.

Dr. Karen Watkins, College of Education associate dean, presents Michael Barbour with his award in the 2005 research conference.

Sun-joo Cho, Feiming Li, Justus Inyega, Mi-young Webb, Peter Rich, Sangwon Kim, and Michael Barbour display their award winning certificates at the 2005 conference.  Each winner was also awarded money for their research presentations.

Dr. Wisenbaker reviews several poster presentations as a judge at the COE Graduate Student Research Conference.
