Research, Evaluation, Measurement and Statistics (REMS)
Admission
The Research, Evaluation, Measurement, and Statistics program has modified its application deadline. Applications for the program will only be considered once per year. The deadline for receipt of applications and all accompanying materials is the 3rd Friday of January.
Candidates for the Master of Education (MEd) and Master of Arts (MA) degrees must have an undergraduate grade point average of at least 2.6 (on a 4 point scale) and a total (Verbal plus Quantitative) Graduate Record Exam (GRE) score of 850 with at least 400 on each of the Verbal and Quantitative portions of the test. Alternatively, a Miller Analogies Test (MAT) score of at least 44 is required for MEd applicants.
Candidates for the Doctor of Education (EdD) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs must have a minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4 point scale) and a graduate grade point average of 3.5. The candidate must also have a total (Verbal plus Quantitative) GRE of 1000.
International applicants must also submit Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores (if English is not the native language). The Graduate School requires a minimum TOEFL score of 550 to be admitted into the University.
Although these are the minimum requirements set forth by the University of Georgia Graduate School, successful applicants to the REMS program often have higher test scores.
Faculty in the REMS program have diverse interests within the broad areas of educational measurement and statistics. We encourage applicants to explore the faculty’s research interests to see whether the REMS program provides a match to their own interests, as well as to determine whether there is a faculty member with whom they would particularly like to work.
Applicants to the REMS program come from a variety of backgrounds. Although prior coursework in education or psychology is not necessary, students admitted without such a background should be prepared to take supplementary coursework to familiarize themselves with educational and psychological issues. Because coursework in REMS is based on mathematical models, it is highly recommended that applicants have a strong background in mathematics. Ideally, this background would include coursework in calculus and linear algebra. Students who are admitted without such a background will be strongly advised to take supplementary coursework in mathematics upon matriculation.
All full-time Graduate Faculty in the Program review the application folder of each candidate. A recommendation to the Graduate School for admission is made if a majority of the faculty vote for admission and at least one faculty member agrees to advise the student temporarily. Candidates admitted into the Program are notified by the Graduate School.
Upon admission, a student is assigned a temporary advisor. This advisor assists the student in the initial course selection and clear the student for registration. Anytime after the first semester in the program, the student may change their advisor. Doctoral students are encouraged to identify an advisory committee before the end of the third semester of study.
