Gifted and Creative Education (GCE)

Admission

The graduate program in Gifted and Creative Education is designed to develop educational leaders and must identify candidates who show great potential. Primary requisites for admission to candidacy are demonstrated competence in scholarly activities and a high degree of aptitude for advanced study. Scholarly insight in analyzing significant trends and issues in instruction, the development of theory, and research is necessary for potential educational leaders.

All applicants for admission to the graduate program in Gifted and Creative Education are required to submit three letters of recommendation, at least two of which must be from faculty who have instructed them in their previous programs of study.

A student may be admitted as a prospective candidate for a graduate degree upon certification by the faculty of the GCE Program that he/she holds scholarly promise, that appropriate courses may be given, and that the student's program can adequately be supported and directed. Minimum test scores and G.P.A.'s are necessary but not sufficient for admission into a graduate program. Such admission must be to an authorized field and must be approved by the Dean of the Graduate School. The graduate faculty will transmit the recommendation. The final decision rests with the Graduate School.

Selection Decisions and Appeals

  1. Admission recommendations are the prerogative of the GCE Program.
  2. Final decisions are made by the Graduate School upon recommendation of the Department.
  3. If a student chooses, she/he may make a formal written appeal of a negative admission recommendation. All faculty in the GCE program area will, at the request of the Graduate Coordinator, reevaluate the applicant's portfolio.
  4. Further appeals within the Department based on factual or procedural errors may be made to the Department Steering Committee.
