Applied Cognition and Development (ACD)Applied Projects in Cognition, Motivation and DevelopmentThe Applied Cognition and Development Area recommends applied projects to students participating in the MEd and EdS programs. Students in the PhD program are also welcome to participate in applied projects but it is recommended that these students produce a publishable article based on their internship experiences. Participation in the applied projects is with the permission of the student¹s advisor. Currently, three types of applied projects are available. Practicum at the McPhaul Center On the approval of and conditions set by the Director of the preschool, students having completed graduate child development classes will serve as assistant teachers at the McPhaul Preschool for a period of one term. Internship on a School Based Research Project Course credit for EPSY 9700 (3 hours) A student and his or her advisor agree to have the student work on a school based research project. The student will work with a faculty member doing school based research including working with teachers to develop and assess intervention programs or changes in curriculum. The student must agree to work at least three hours per week in the school. It is also strongly recommended that the student write either a research paper based on the work or a paper aimed at presenting prinicples to professional practice. The student¹s advisor must agree to supervise the internship. A satisfactory grade will be based on the student¹s work and information from the prinicipal investigator of the project and the school. Team Intervention Project Internship Course credit for EPSY 9700 (3 hours) With permission of his or her advisor, the student is paired with a teacher, students in school psychology and possibly other disciplines to work with the teacher to improve the performance of a single student in that class. The team will meet with the teacher twice a month to discuss the progress of the intervention. During the initial meeting, the problem will be presented and discussed. An intervention plan will be created including a diagnosis of the problem, an outline of the areas that need intervention and best practice methods for the intervention. With each successive meeting the team will determine with the teacher the success of the intervention and any changes that need to be made to improve the intervention. To fulfill the requirements of this course, the ACD student is required to do a literature review on the issue in question (e.g., reading learning disabilities) and to make recommendations for best practice methods given what we currently know about the issue. The student is required to complete a report outlining the problem, presenting relevant literature, the recommendations based on this review, and the outcome of the implementation of those recommendations. In addition to the paper, a satisfactory grade for this course will be based on feedback from the teacher and school. The advisor will be responsible for monitoring the progress of the student. |
