Student Assignment

The June 2007 United States Supreme Court ruling, Meredith v. Jefferson County Board of Education, struck down the use of voluntary race-based assignment plans in two districts, Seattle and Louisville.  However, a majority of the Court also affirmed that racial balance is a compelling governmental interest.  This raises vital questions about which policy alternatives are open to school systems throughout the South, which once achieved the highest levels of school desegregation in the nation, but is now undergoing rapid resegregation as well as high levels of immigration.

The Policy Research Group provides nonpartisan research and in-depth analysis to policymakers and educators on issues to improve education. We also publish policy research briefs to inform the conversation on education policy issues in Georgia and nationally.  Affiliated faculty members are drawn from all of the College’s academic departments.

Student Assignment

“The new era beyond court-ordered desegregation promises massive though still uncertain changes in the patterns of student assignment and enrollment that could reshape southern education for the coming generation.”

– John Charles Boger, Dean of UNC Law School, 2003
