State and Federal Accountability Policies

As in other regions of the country, schools throughout the South have implemented a variety of testing and accountability policies in response to both state-level legislation and the federal mandates of No Child Left Behind.  Policy Research Group faculty are engaged in a variety of studies that inform policy and practice in this area, from critical examination of  assessments for English language-learners to and  mathematics curriculum for middle schools to examination of policy consequences of high school graduation tests.  The Policy Research Group’s agenda in the area of accountability policy also includes charter schools and public and private school choice, particularly within the context of southern school systems.

Student Assignment

“Although per-pupil spending, adjusted for inflation, has more than doubled since 1970, high school graduation rates and test scores of seventeen-year-olds have hardly budged from levels attained years ago.  The performance of American students in mathematics and science continues to lag far behind that of their peers abroad.  A half-century after Brown put an end to legally sanctioned segregation in the schools, gaps in basic skills along lines of ethnicity and income remain scandalously wide.”

– West and Peterson, 2007
