What is it?

What is an Early Community Experience?

An Early Community Experience is a volunteer opportunity, for credit course, or paid position in which you have an opportunity to interact with children and families while experiencing a variety of communities and cultures that may be different from your own.

Examples of Early Community Experiences

What if I want to test my interest in teaching as a career?

  1. If you are not sure what you want to teach or would like to test your idea of working with certain grade levels or content areas, you may want to complete some Early Community Experiences. View examples of Early Community Experiences and a list of a variety of Early Community Experiences Opportunities in Northeast Georgia, paid positions, and service learning courses that may interest you. Contact information is provided for your information.

    Other things you can do:

  2. You may want to complete the Early Community Experiences Supervisor Interview Form and Reflection Form (required for some UGA College of Education programs and departments) for each experience. The questions on the forms were designed to help you reflect on your experience in relation to your career goals and education. Completion of these forms will also ensure that you have documentation if you choose to apply for admission into teacher education. (Continue to search this site to review the requirements for Early Community Experiences and view the forms.)

  3. You may want to view some of the teacher education program and department websites to learn more about additional admission requirements, courses offered, and general departmental information and news.

What are the requirements?

Many College of Education departments and programs require a set number of hours of Early Community Experiences, sometimes called Preprofessional Experiences.

  1. In general, you must have at least two (2) Early Community Experiences in a volunteer opportunity, for credit course, or paid position in the community prior to entering a teacher education program or department. At least one experience must be instructional in nature, and at least one experience must be in a diverse setting.

  2. Each of these experiences must be documented.

However, requirements differ among programs and departments. If you know the grade and/or content area you want to teach, please contact the specific program or department of your choice to review the specific requirements for your intended field.
