Your Responsibilities
Responsibilities for Prospective Students:
- You are responsible for your own participation in Early Community Experiences.
- The University of Georgia urges you to use good judgment in all your interactions with any agency, business, school, or non-profit organization to which you may be applying. UGA does not endorse nor screen any placement listed within this website.
- Responsibility for choosing your own Early Community Experiences is up to you. No permission from any faculty or department is necessary, nor will a placement be assigned to you. You decide what works best for you and use reasonable care in selecting your Early Community Experiences. Use good judgment and common sense to ensure you are safe in every community and school situation. Do not place yourself in jeopardy and do not participate in any experience in which you are not comfortable.
- Some placements require a criminal background check. For example, many school districts require a background check to work or volunteer in an after-school program. Be sure to ask if there are any such requirements. The school or agency may provide these services for a small fee or may be able to tell you how to acquire them.
- Some community partners cover volunteers under their organizational liability insurance coverage policy. Be sure to ask if you are covered and under what circumstances. You may choose to carry your own coverage.
- You may be required to attend an orientation session to inform you of an organization's rules and regulations. You have the responsibility to be willing to learn, to follow directions, to be dependable, to accept supervision, and to honor your commitment to the policies the organization set for you.
- Confidentiality regulations vary among agencies, businesses, schools, and non-profit organizations. If it is not covered in an orientation session, ask what the rules are.

Responsibilities for Community Businesses, Schools, Non-Profit Organizations, and Social Service Agencies:
Thank you for agreeing to place your organization's volunteer or paid positions on the Early Community Experiences web site. Young people can learn a great deal in a non-profit organization, social service agency, business, or other community setting that will benefit them in any career they choose. Students who have a variety of community experiences are better pre-service teachers and ultimately better teachers. We appreciate your willingness to help prospective students begin to reflect on their experiences in relation to teaching and other career goals.
The University of Georgia does not screen applicants or vouch for their reliability. Your organization's name and contact information appears on the Early Community Experience list, along with other organizations, as a potential opportunity for young people wanting to serve in the community. It is their choice to contact your organization.
Additional information is provided below to help both organizations and students have positive, rewarding Early Community Experiences.
- You may want to review the information on responsibilities for prospective students that we have provided for interested students.
- Your organization may want to provide an orientation to the limits of insurance, tort liability, and/or workmen's compensation for volunteers and part-time employees.
- Your organization is under no obligation to provide a place/position for any applicant.
- Early Community Experiences students who apply to the University of Georgia are asked to interview a supervisor. Supervisors will be invited to respond to some career-related questions and asked to initial a verification form. It is the student's responsibility to request an interview and ensure that it takes place.
