- Mentors are needed to be a friend for a middle school student. Background checks are required and a 2-hour training session is mandatory early in the school year. Mentors are paired with a student for one hour per week visits.
- Volunteers needed to help teachers on projects, bulletin boards, events, reading to classes, supervising students, sponsoring club activities, and other related office work. The amount of time spent at the school in volunteer situations is up to the volunteer.
- Substitute teachers needed. Applications may be picked up at the Barrow County School District office. The cost of a required background check and fingerprinting ($24) is paid by the applicant. A short training session is required.
- The Volunteer Coordinator at Winder Barrow Middle School recommends that you come by and sign up to mentor or volunteer first. Then when you have observed teaching and learning, you might move on to substitute teaching. She reminds us that substitute teaching sometimes leads to student-teaching placements and full-time teaching positions!
