Diversity

Diverse Early Community Experiences are those with learners whose backgrounds differ from your own.

Examples of diversity include:

  • Geographic locations (e.g., rural, urban, suburban, state, country)
  • Cultures (e.g., Hispanic, southern, northern, rural, urban)
  • Gender distinctions and expectations (e.g., chores, issues of power)
  • Race, ethnicity, and language (e.g., history, dialect)
  • Schooling experiences (e.g., home, public, private, progressive, traditional, curriculum, instruction, graded, nongraded, Montessori)
  • Lifestyles (e.g., work, leisure, hobbies)
  • Personal, familial, and societal expectations (e.g., family size, marriage expectations)
  • Socioeconomic class distinctions and expectations (e.g., blue collar, white collar)
