COE Multicultural Education Grants

UGA College of Education Multicultural Grant Recipient 1994 – 2000

Among the recommendations made in the January, 1994 “Summary Report: Issues Clarification Effort, Multicultural Education Initiative” was for the college to provide leadership for multicultural education by allocating funds for support of School and departmental initiatives in multicultural education. This recommendation was discussed at the July, 1994 multicultural education retreat and resulted in a proposal to Dean Yeany. Specifically, the proposal asked for the establishment of “mini-grants” to provide incentive, help initiate, and support departmental and/or School efforts in multicultural education. It was suggested that a pool of money be established and available on an annual basis from the Dean’s Office, to be awarded in response to a competitive application process. It was suggested that the mini-grants could be used as start up funds to support, for example, departmental retreats for diversity training and/or planning; consultants; and/or the acquisition of multicultural resource materials in specific content areas. Dean Yeany responded positively to this proposal and allocated up to $10,000 in mini-grants for the 1994-1995 academic year. To date, 47 mini-grants have been awarded to college faculty, staff and students and the yearly allocation for these grants, as well as the competition to receive a grant, has increased yearly. Among the outcomes and products of these grants are: all day departmental training on diversity; conference presentations at state, national and international conferences; referred journal articles; seed money to provide baseline data for competing for larger grants; development of CD Rom instructional materials; development of instructional videos and teacher guides; and, the establishment of a multicultural library classroom in the COE.
