The State Botanical Gardens offers a peaceful environment for strolling, picnicking and education. The five miles of trails wander through field and forest. Among the myriad of native plant-species, the Garden features many formal gardens such as the Flower Garden, International Garden, Heritage Garden, and Shade Garden.  Educational programs are offered weekly.

Georgia Museum of Art

The Museum houses nearly 10,000 works of art from a multitude of genres. In addition, it hosts traveling exhibitions year round. Complete with a relaxing sculpture garden, the Museum’s beautiful new facility offers hours of visual and intellectual stimulation.  A $3.00 donation is suggested.

Monday & Tuesday: by appointment only; priority given to groups and UGA research
Wednesday, Friday, Saturday: noon – 5 p.m.
Thursday: 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Sunday: 1 – 5 p.m.

House Tours
Tours can be self-guided or formally guided. For formally guided tours, start with the Church-Brumby house. Houses of particular interest:

A Federal style home that doubles as the Athens Welcome Center, the Church-Brumby is an  excellent place to start a tour of homes.
Free admission.  Hours: 10 a.m .- 5 p.m. Mon. – Sat; noon – 5 p.m. Sun.
Open until 6 p.m. during daylight savings months, April – October.

Refreshingly pink and of Confederate heritage, the Cobb house is a must-see.

A National Historic site with Italianate architectural features, the Ware-Lyndon is part of the Lyndon Arts center. Free admission. Hours: noon – 9 p.m. Tues. and Thurs.; 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Wed., Fri., and Sat.  Closed Sun. and Mon.

A National Historic Landmark, this Greek revival home offers a host of architectural twist and turns.
$3 per person. Hours: 9 a.m – 5 p.m. Mon. – Fri.  Closed from 1 – 2:30 p.m.

Memorial Park/Bear Hollow Zoo

Free Admission

Memorial Park offers picnicking, playgrounds, hiking and swimming. The Park is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to sunset and from 9 a.m. to sunset on weekends and holidays. The Zoo offers observation of and education about Georgia’s native wildlife. Bear Hollow is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The exhibit hall is open on Sundays, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Sandy Creek Nature Center

Sandy Creek Nature Center is an Athens treasure that offers children’s programs, hiking, a library, nature trails, special events and workshops, teen programs, walking / jogging path, wildlife preserve / zoo, and wildlife-based educational programs. The interpretive naturalists will enlighten visitors with knowledge about Georgia’s natural habitats.

Sandy Creek Park offers lake swimming, picnicking, disc golf course, basketball courts, tennis, hiking trails and special events. Open Tuesday – Sunday until 7pm; Closed Mondays. $2. Over 65 free.
