Appendix C: Report of the Millennium Commission - Cover Letter

August 17, 1999

Dear Colleagues,

This is the final report of the Millennium Commission of the University of Georgia College of Education. We proudly share this with our new dean, Louis Castenell, and all members of our college community. The Millennium Commission was established in March of 1998 by Dean Russ Yeany to envision the future of the Next Great College of Education that would open in the Fall of 2004. The Commission, composed of over thirty members of faculty, students, staff, retired faculty, and alumni, from across all schools, was asked to develop core values, goals, possible activities, and enabling recommendations as a framework for setting priorities, allocating resources, and determining implementation strategies. The Commission was officially endorsed by the Faculty Senate, School Directors, Alumni Association, Staff Council, and various student associations.

The task was to envision the changes needed to transform the College of Education into a community of scholars and learners that would both enact the core guiding principles; and position the College to be a leader in the world our students and faculty will face in the future. The Commission©ˆs role was to take the lead in thinking about these issues. It remains for the faculty and departments of the College to implement these and other suggestions in order to enable this College to continue to be in the forefront of Colleges of Education nationally and internationally while preparing our students to meet the challenges of the next millennium. To this end, the Commission has deliberated and provided a number of recommendations and suggested activities.

The Commission worked for more than a year soliciting input from people and groups both within the College of Education community and outside this community. The process included interviews with the Dean of Arts and Sciences, the Dean of Education, the College Business Manager, and the new Provost. Commission members reviewed previous internal studies and reports; and read national studies and reports on higher education including articles about the changing nature of academic work and about changes in Colleges of Education in particular.

he Commission heard reports on the major strategic initiatives of the College of Education. Members of the Millennium Commission wrote position papers on their vision of the future and brainstormed core principles and goals to move to a vision. The Commission presented its initial ideas to the College of Education at the annual meeting and sought feedback. It surveyed members of the college, staff, students, and alumni and created a web site to make all deliberations public. Faculty and staff were polled in December in order to determine their support of the core principles that underlie this document. The Commission met a dozen times, held a town hall meeting, regularly solicited feedback, and asked for comments on each subsequent draft of its report.

A faculty and staff vote on the core values of the document was held in January, 1999. The faculty vote was 70 yes, 24 no, a vote of approximately 40% of the faculty. Staff Council endorsed the core values unanimously. The Commission then presented the revised document to all commission members for comments, editing, and additions. The document was revised again to integrate these suggestions. Subsequently, the document was presented to the School Directors, Staff Council members, to Faculty Senate members, and through them to all departments for suggestions.

The Commission now presents this final document of the vision and values that we hold in common. We are proud of this vision and hope that it serves as a foundation to our future. We ask the College of Education Strategic Planning Committee, the new Dean, the Faculty Senate, the Alumni Association, the Staff Council, and each school and department to take the next steps to use these goals, activities, and enabling recommendations to make this vision a reality.

Cordially,

The Millennium Commission
